À propos de cet audio

"Fans of the series will enjoy exploring secondary characters' lives and the truly heroic compromises Tom makes to be with the woman he loves." (Library Journal)

He needed peace....

Solicitor Tom Finchley has spent his life using his devious intellect to solve the problems of others. As for his own problems, they're nothing that a bit of calculated vengeance can't remedy. But that's all over now. He's finally ready to put the past behind him and settle down to a quiet, uncomplicated life. If only he could find an equally uncomplicated woman.

She wanted adventure....

Former lady's companion Jenny Holloway has just been given a modest independence. Now, all she wants is a bit of adventure. A chance to see the world and experience life far outside the restrictive limits of Victorian England. If she can discover the fate of the missing Earl of Castleton while she's at it, so much the better.

From the gaslit streets of London to the lush tea gardens of colonial India, Jenny and Tom embark on an epic quest - and an equally epic romance. But even at the farthest edges of the British Empire, the past has a way of catching up with you....

Not the best in the series - tedious and slow

I’ve now finished 3 out of the 4 books in the Parish Orphans of Devon series and thank goodness they are not all like this one. I really struggled to finish this book and only did finish because the first book in the series was great and the next one looked like it gets better (it does, much better!).

This book is incredibly slow, tedious, repetitive... nothing happens at all until the very end, tacked on almost like an afterthought. The setting of India and the travel journey falls flat; it read more like a travel diary reciting a list of destinations than like the characters are actually there because mostly it's just a book about Tom and Jenny's feelings not so much an adventure that they are on. Most of the story is spent on boats and trains and in carts anyways.

I think I would have enjoyed this more as a novella; if it was half the length and not so drawn out and it would have been fine.

Mimi Matthews’ other books are all character driven and not flashy books with grand adventures, and I appreciate that about them. In this case, maybe it’s the characters I didn’t warm up to, or their situation, I just found it all tiresome.

Also, unlike the other books I’ve read so far by this author, the characters dance around each other, mope incessantly, and agonize over things constantly through the entire book. It gets old and, as I said, tedious. About halfway through the book I switched to 2x narration speed just to get through it faster. All the moping and agonizing makes it hard to warm up to the characters, especially Jenny.

That said, it wasn’t the most terrible book... just slow and I find Jenny and her reasoning very weak for carrying an entire story. I won’t give up on Mimi Matthews as an author because so far, 4 out of 5 books of hers that I've read have been outstanding. I think this one’s just a blip. Too bad it’s one in a series so I can’t just skip over it.

A Modest Entertainment

While in my opinion not as engaging as others of her books, her writing style never disappoints. Well thought out and paced. Dialogue became repetitive over the point of tension in the story.
Overall it is enjoyable.
