À propos de cet audio
A complete one-volume history of India. The book covers all the major landmarks of Indian history from prehistoric times up to the 21st century—starting with the country’s geological origins a few billion years in the past and the migration of Homo sapiens from Africa into the region several millennia ago. It traces the evolution of Indian civilization through a multitude of epochs, personalities and turning points, including the Harappan Culture, Vedic Society, the age of Mahavira and the Buddha, Ashoka and the Mauryas, the Gupta period, the Delhi Sultanate, major kingdoms in the east, west and south, the Mughal empire, European incursions into the subcontinent, the British Raj, the freedom struggle led by Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Bose, Tagore and others, Independence and Partition and key developments in the life of the modern republic. Deepening the overarching narrative are essays on archaeology, caste, religion, art, architecture, philosophy, language, culture, the economy and various aspects of the nation’s plural, diverse society. Written by award-winning historian Rudrangshu Mukherjee along with cultural historian Shobita Punja and photographer-archivist Toby Sinclair, A New History of India brings the story of one of the oldest, most complex countries on earth to vivid life with a text of depth, clarity and rigorous scholarship.

good overview
obviously can't cover everything, but it's a good way to start getting into Indian history.

Overly Ambitious
Shobita Punja, Rudrangsh Mukherjee, and Toby Sinclair try to cover so much history in this book that you are forgiven if your eyes go blurry while you try to pay attention. The information overload is unmanageable.
To be fair, the history of India is packed with culture, religion, politics, and philosophy - the authors were obligated to try to cover as much as possible.. but a properly-conducted Smorgasbord approach (a little of this, a sample of that..) could have worked. Unfortunately, these authors are exceedingly clinical & dry in exploring their selections.
As to presentation: On the good side, the appended Full-Color PDF is easy to browse and helpful for enriching/clarifying the text. Less fortuitously, it's organized chronologically with no attempt at indexing. Reader Elvis Mathias is furthermore so mechanical and guilty of so many mispronunciations that it's clear that English isn't his native language. A Google Translate Text-To-Voice bot would have been a better choice for Audible Studios Inc. to cast.
Altogether, this book feels like an attempt to pack five or six graduate-level courses into a single book.. and then deliver it in overly academic language with a droning reader. I was dismayed enough to have abandoned it about halfway through (and that is extremely rare for me). Even for free, this 2/10-star audiobook isn't worth your time. Pass.
