À propos de cet audio
This program is read by the author.
The acclaimed author of American Dirt reveals the devastating effects of a shocking tragedy in this landmark true crime book.
A Rip in Heaven is Jeanine Cummins’s story of a night in April 1991, when her two cousins Julie and Robin Kerry, and her brother, Tom, were assaulted on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River just outside of St. Louis.
When, after a harrowing ordeal, Tom managed to escape the attackers and flag down help, he thought the nightmare would soon be over. He couldn’t have been more wrong. Along with their entire family, he and his sister, Jeanine, were just at the beginning of a horrific odyssey through the aftermath of a violent crime, a world of shocking betrayal, endless heartbreak, and utter disillusionment. It was a trial by fire from which no family member would emerge unscathed.

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

So heartfelt and well told.
Jeanine is a brilliant writer, I read American Dirt and no other book seemed good enough or able to compare until I listened to this one. Jeanine is brilliant, and having her read this book with all the emotion put into it made it that much more poignant. I highly recommend this book.

Couldn’t stop listening
A very sad story beautifully written. I would have liked an explanation about toms hip but other than that I loved it. Did a double marathon with this book and American Dirt; Cummins is a very talented writer, I look forward to her next book.

Compelling yet disturbing!
I could not turn this book off. It will sit with me for a longtime. The abuse of authority is beyond words. Such corruption in the St Louis police department yet not held accountable. Mind blowing. A must read. Be prepared for a frightening and descriptive crime.

Well described the family tragic experience
I am not sure that rating this book with ‘likes’ was appropriate in this case and yet I do feel that the book deserves all the stars.
The book is very well written especially considering the author’s emotions she must have experienced throughout the writing and reading the story.
I have recently read/listened another two books (fiction) written by Jeanine Cummins and I am very impressed by her writing. The characters and the stories are very well described and I would warmly recommend her books.

A must read for the victims.
I dont often review the books I read or listen to.
I felt this one had to be reviewed and more importantly I wanted to make sure others honoured these victims by listening to this book. And by listening, I hope we are all compelled to think about all other victims who we would have possibly ignored when we are given the opportunity to hear their stories. I think we are better equipped to read through the BS we are often fed about those situations now.
This was not an easy read but it sure was hard to put down. It was difficult because it is so well written and on many occasions you just want to scream in frustration at the unfairness of the way these victims were treated by authorities, by the media, and the organizations they trusted and supported.
I realize it is one individual’s account, but I trust it is a very honest account.
Kudos for the courage it has taken for all those involved in this story and to the writer for sharing this.

Soul wrenching
This story moved me to tears in numerous places. I agree that victims often get put into the background as the perpetuators take centre stage.
NOTE TO AUTHOR: When Julie told you to go ahead and write, she must have had insight into your abilities. Well done. We won't forget your cousins ...

Julie and Robin Kerry, I will never forget you!
Absolutely unbelievable true horror story! From every chapter I couldn’t stop listening. The knowledge I received from the Author will stay with me forever. I will never think of victims of crime the same again. Powerful!!
