À propos de cet audio
This is an audiobook about fear. Fear of a virus. Fear of death. Fear of losing our jobs, our democracy, our human connections, our health, and our minds. It's also about how the government weaponised our fear against us - supposedly in our best interests - until we were one of the most frightened countries in the world.
But why did the government deliberately frighten us. How has this affected us as individuals and as a country? Who is involved in the decision-making that affects our lives? How are behavioural science and nudge theory being used to subliminally manipulate us? How does the media leverage fear? What are the real risks to our well-being?
Ahead of any official inquiry into the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Laura Dodsworth explores all these questions and more, in a nuanced and thought-provoking discussion of an extraordinary year in British life and politics. With stories from members of the general public who were impacted by fear, anxiety, and isolation, and revealing interviews with psychologists, politicians, scientists, lawyers, Whitehall advisers and journalists, A State of Fear calls for a more hopeful, transparent and effective democracy.

Some excellent insights
Really enjoyed the attention put into exposing how government is using fear and nudge technology to control their narrative through the pandemic.
Highly recommended.

More people should read this book
The book is well researched and easy to listen to. It documents the overreaction to the pandemic and the ways in which those in authority can use fear to manipulate the public. If we are more aware, individually and collectively, of the techniques when the next crisis erupts, as it will, we will be able to act in ways that a more measured and productive.

Will be polarizing...and Im all here for it!
A large group will be confirmed with the meticulous writing and references at the inane silliness of the fear perpetrated by the media, government, and organizations, The other will spew vitriolic rhetoric like "conspiracy theories" only to cover their Jungian shadow projection hiding that they have fallen victim to the great grift of fear.
The book however showcases the impending doom of anxiety, depression, and obsessive compulsivity through interviews which is sad and will be a problem that will impact society even after the fear of COVID is long gone.
The hate from this book will come from individuals who followed the rules meticulously - perhaps even shamed others for not following the rules - and will practice cognitive dissonance and retreat to their corners. Nuance will unfortunately not be the outcome of this work, but that was expected in this political climate.

Unassailable
I pray that future generations look back at the propaganda and hysteria of the here and now with the appropriate level of disgust and disbelief, and that it's books like this that set the record straight. If you've been steeped in the machinations of supranational technocrat NGOs (and so forth) that have been calling the shots throughout all this, you might think Dodsworth doesn't dig deep enough, or that she naively perceives incompetence and panic where in fact there is deliberate malice - but I think it's to her credit. She doesn't speculate and keeps her own prejudices and political ideology in the background, instead she just wades through a sea of information and discerns what is grounded in truth. As a result I can't imagine how any rational and moral person could dismiss the points made in this work.
I gotta say I'm impressed with how well put together the book is given that she can't have had very long to work on it. She went after the right sources, gave anecdotal context when needed, and painted a picture that, while disturbing, brings much needed sobriety to analysis of what exactly has been going on in these mad times. She also narrated the book impecably well. It's a book that I think might actually be able to break through to some of the uninformed that have just been going with the flow on all this, and maybe even challenge a covid zealot or two to reconsider their newfound religion.
Unfortunately I think it may be up to all of us to preserve these accounts for the future, since it seems many in positions to do so have been systematically erasing and suppressing the work of good journalists and instead are boosting histrionics, propaganda, PR, hatred, and the false narratives of partisans and special interests. Dodsworth can't have written this book for wealth, fame, or favor with the intellectual elite - she will almost certainly receive none of that. She wrote it for us - for the masses. She risks her career and her reputation in so doing. It's laudable and it gives me hope for the future that intelligent and moral people like her are out there trying to pull us back from the brink.
