Description
Sequel to The Consumption of Magic
Nearly a year ago, blinded by grief and betrayal, Sam of Wilds made a desperate decision to follow the Great White into the Dark Woods. Now, he emerges to a world changed.
The City of Lockes is a prison. The King has been locked away in the dungeons. The Kingdom of Verania has fallen, and the Dark wizard Myrin sits on the throne.
But soon after his return, Sam learns of a resistance fighting in his name, led by a courageous knight, a defiant prince, a pissed-off unicorn, and a half-giant who wants to smash everything in sight. If he has any hope of defeating the villains who have taken their home, Sam must face the consequences of his choices - and the friends he left behind.

Finally
What a finish! That has certainly been a ride. Sam redeemed himself-although still annoying - and all the dragons were there. It was Kevin, Zero & Co that brought me back ... and I loved them.

great story!!
well written. I devoured the whole series very quickly and couldn't stop. the narrator is astounding and I genuinely think I wouldn't have enjoyed the books as much without him. highly recommend.
but for the love of the gods, the sound effects are severely obnoxious and completely unnecessary. I wish there was an option to turn them off.

So Sad It Is Over
I loved this book and the whole series. I am so sad to reach the end. It was hinted that there is another story to be told. I hope this is true and there are many more. The narrator is amazing! there was never any doubt which character was speaking and all voices perfectly suited them. The really amazing part was when the characters were magically transformed into completely different characters with different voices and yet I could still recognize who their original character was.

GAH
INCOHERENT SCREAMING. I AM NOTHING BUT INCOHERENT SCREAMING.
A Wish Upon the Star by TJ Klune is the fourth book in the Tales of Verania series, however it also works to wrap up the mini-trilogy that exists within the saga. Nearly a year after Sam of Wilds made the desperate decision to follow the Great White into the Dark Woods, he emerges to a world changed.
While he was away, the Dark’s rose. City of Lockes is a prison, housing peasants alongside the King. Locked into the dungeon, Myrin sits on his empty throne.
But all isn’t lost. Sam soon learns of the resistance fighting in his name led by those he loves the most. And if they have any hope of defeating the Dark’s who have taken their home, Sam must face the consequences of those he left behind.
A Wish Upon the Star does an AMAZING job at wrapping up the self-contained trilogy within this larger series. Klune ties up all the ends I can think of, bringing together everyone for this final showdown in a way that left me feeling satisfied after such a long journey.
Another long book, this one doesn’t seem to drag on at all. With a healthy dose of character development, feels, and a lot of really cool action, A Wish Upon a Star was a leisurely stroll towards the end of Sam’s destiny, and one I wasn’t sure I wanted to see come to an end.
This book, like the last two in this series, are going to stick with me for a long time. While I try to work through exactly how I feel about this installment, I KNOW that I love love love what Klune has done with Sam and his character.
While subtle at first, spending almost a year in the woods getting pounded with magic has changed Sam. Not fundamentally, no, but there’s a maturity to him that we hadn’t seen before. It’s exceptionally subtle at the beginning of the book, when he’s still learning all that’s happened to his people, but as this story unfolds there’s a new… stillness to Sam that wasn’t there before. While he’s still brash and impulsive, sure, there’s another layer to him that we get to see.
With that comes a greater familiarity with his magic, which was something that I loved to see! One of my favourite parts about reading fantasy novels is the different takes on magic and magical systems, and I’ve always really enjoyed the way Sam’s magic is described! In A Wish Upon A Star, the green and gold are all so much closer to the surface than they’ve ever been before, and he has a much greater sense of control than we’ve ever seen.
Along with Sam’s personal growth, I really liked the shift in Sam and Ryan’s relationship. While Sam had been away, Ryan — and the rest of Sam’s family — were left behind and had to watch as their home was taken away. I think this touched everyone a little bit in different ways, but I liked the way Sam and Ryan’s relationship has blossomed.
These two had a super solid sense of themselves in the last book, and that didn’t change here beyond the initial reassurance they each sought from one another. After they reconnected, I was relieved to see that they went back to being as strong as ever!
Another character that showed a lot of growth was Justin! I loved loved loved seeing him blossom into a king. When he gave his big speech, I spent the whole time shivering. Every time he called Sam his best friend, I lowkey teared up. I really came to love Justin during the last few books, and seeing him blossom into such a capable king made my heart so happy!
Near the beginning of the book, Klune does address some of the… dated parts of the first four books that really didn’t age well. In a way that I personally felt seemed a bit sarcastic, Klune makes a point to call out some of the inappropriate jokes the previous books (the first one especially) had. Additionally, he addresses the use of the word g*psy, correctly identifying it as a slur with a racially charged connotation. I was glad to see that bit handled a bit more respectfully, and even happier the word wasn’t used on page.
There are truly so many different things that I enjoyed about this novel, and it’s definitely one that I look forward to reading again one day. Maybe then I’ll be able to articulate my thoughts a little better, but for now, A Wish Upon a Star felt like the perfect finale to the trilogy that exists within the Tales of Verania series.
With an epilogue that healed my heart, this book was a firm five-stars.

not the author's best work
i find by the main character's arc just kinda of disappointing. the cast keep telling us he's changed, but he's still the same petulant kid he always was. whining and running from responsibility like a child.
i suppose the book is still meant to comedic, not to be taken too seriously but that doesn’t make me feel less unsatisfied.
