À propos de cet audio

Born a monster. Destined to be a hero. Half-orc. Half-human. All hero.

Lugor is a half-orc, and in his world, that's a very dangerous thing to be. He dreams of becoming an adventurer, slaying monsters and delving into dungeons. Unfortunately for him, one cut to his skin could reveal his secret.

He's forced to spend his days in his small village, working at the smithy and keeping his head down. But when his world is turned upside down in a monster attack on his village, Lugor seeks training at the Adventurer Academy, where he can learn to become the champion that he was born to be. It won't be easy, especially whilst contending against an arrogant mage who is determined to see him fail.

With a steadfast dwarven elementalist and a sarcastic dark-elf necromancer by his side, Lugor sets out to prove that just because he's half-orc doesn't mean he can't be a hero.

This story includes the following:

  • Half-monster protagonist
  • Game mechanics in a fantasy world
  • Sword and board protagonist
  • Crafting abilities like enchantment and blacksmithing

Great Book

First time I listened to any of this authors book. Great story. Highly suggest a listen. Story is well written with nicely fleshed out characters.

Cheeky and unpredictable, but without the whiplash

Pleasantly surprised by this one. Enough crafting and skill buying to get me interested without any of the droning self reflection that made me return the last litrpg that I bought.

Amazing

I really enjoyed this series so far, I truly hope there is more coming about Lugor and his people .
I also really enjoyed what I've heard about the world so far in the books so far and hope there will be more series made in this fascinating world.

Opinionated Review

Overall this was a really interesting and extremely well performed audio book.
For obvious reasons I'm going to try and avoid spoilers.

In my experience with audio books there are 2 parts. How good is the book itself and how well it was performed for audio.

Both of which were really good in this case. More-so the performance over the book, but its a preference.

For the book:
It was really well written with interesting characters each with their own unique personality.
There are also all the side characters as well that definitely help support the mains an help guide the story.
Plus there is a nice amount of information given on cultural differences between races.
Its interesting to see the interactions between different species but could have done with some more world building and lore.

Listening through this there were several questions that I had that were never really answered.
In addition, there were some instances that aggravated me on how the characters acted.
Ultimately, I appreciated these because that's just how they are/were written.

For the Audio Performance:
This had what I had always wanted from an audiobook and was an incredible production from Soundbooth Theaters.

Listening to all the little noises in the background of characters or even just sounds of hooves clopping among the cobblestone really brought this to life.
Clanks, bangs, pops, slicing, laughter, groaning, slurring, and accents. Each used and well timed not interfering with narration, but enhancing it.
These were the main things that caught my attention as no other audiobook I've heard have done them.

Character Audio was also really good as each main character had their own actor.
Not just a single actor making their voice sound differently.
This is something that often bugs me in others of if a masculine voice is the narrator and trys to sound feminine. Vise versa.
You eventually get used to it, but its still disorientating at first.

Again, overall very good. I'd give it a 4.5, but due to review limitations I gave it a overall 5 as I would like others to hear this.

A little shakey in a few places, but otherwise an

Sound quality was off for most of the cast, like they were recording most of their lines at home instead of a proper studio. Other than that it was an amazing story!

Great Read!

The performance was top notch! I loved the characters and the story was engaging and enjoyable. One part was absolutely heart breaking and is often enough to make me abandon a book. So it's speaks volumes that I never even considered. At least it acted as a trigger to a major story plot.

Aimed At Nerdy Tweens

..Unfortunately, I might be a geek, but I'm not 11 anymore.
Daniel Prince offers his take on Fantasy Adventure within the matrix of a structured Game-based Reality: introducing misfit half-orc 'Lugor' navigating a D&D-clone world. The writing is creditable, the mechanics of the world are unoriginal but plausible, and the central themes are admirable and morally supportable (doing good, dealing with prejudice, resisting temptation, perseverance, altruism, and self-sacrifice). This is a book that you can consume confidently around impressionable young listeners (recognizing that here are occasional mild swear words)
Sadly for older readers, the book is distinctly sophomoric (talking animals is a *children's* book mainstay - and they make an appearance here, for example).

As to presentation: The cast of readers (Gary Furlong, Annie Ellicott, Will M. Walt, Aurelia Vasquez, and Jeff Hays) deliver capable performances backed up by quality technical support and (largely) judicious sound effects/emphases from Soundbooth Studios engineers. Daniel John Prince Publishing (Yes, this is self-published) did well to get them involved on the project.

Altogether, 'Adventurer's Academy' merits 4.5 stars out of 10 (if I were a kid just starting my LitRPG journey, I would likely rate it higher). The story would serve as a nice introduction to the genre for young listeners who are unfamiliar with Fantasy worldbuilding elements, magic systems, and game mechanics (XP rewards, skill progression, loot acquisition, Tank/DPS/Healer/Spellcaster Party dynamics, etc.) while still including core YA themes like friendships, cliques, and bullies in a school setting. It would be an ideal audiobook if you're driving around with somewhat dorkish but imaginative kids in the back seat.. and, hey! It's Free!!
As a more experienced adult consumer of GameLit, however, I found the book unsophisticated. I won't be continuing with the 'Greyblood' book series. It's far too immature for my demographic.

[NOTE: The book ends in a Cliffhanger. If you give this entry a try, you may feel obligated to purchase 'Greyblood II']
