À propos de cet audio

Detroit mortgage broker Mark Unger adored his wife Florence and their two young sons. But after a decade of marriage and increasing financial trouble, Mark's life began to slowly unravel. He became addicted to pain killers and gambling, and ended up spending five months in rehab.

Forced to go back to work, Flo became bitter and resentful of Mark and began to have an affair with one of his friends. When Mark returned home and his disability checks weren't enough to make ends meet, Flo filed for divorce.

Panicked by the thought losing her, Mark did everything he could to win Flo back. Even though she resisted his efforts, Flo did agree to a weekend getaway at the family's favorite lakeside resort. But after their first night there, Flo went missing...and the next day her corpse was found floating in the water. Mark claimed that her death was an accident - one that must have happened while he was up at the cottage putting the kids to sleep. But soon a jury would be convinced of what Flo's friends and family believed to be true: that Flo would never have been alone on the boat dock that night because she was deathly afraid of the dark.

Captivating - If Potentially Unreliable - True Crime

Tom Henderson explores what should be - on paper - a relatively routine "spurned-husband-kills-wife-in-the-midst-of-a-contentious-divorce" case. I was surprised to find myself engrossed in the notably unspectacular crime & trial (this is no headline-grabber.. but I was caught up in the drama).
Henderson's research is meticulous, and his direct transcription of court stenographer notes is appreciated. Unfortunately, the author also presents clearly hypothetical dialogue generously (in limine motions, for example).. leaving me unsure of what is truth and what is (perhaps unintentional) manipulative bias. I was left suspicious that Henderson's opinions may have swayed his presentation (he doesn't explore a deliberately contentious case and "leave it up to readers" as much as True Crime writers should). The book got me wondering what the author might have left out/underemphasized.

As to presentation: Reader Paul Michael Garcia isn't able to make individuals sound distinctive (he's not much of a voice-actor), but his narration - diction, timbre, cadence, pacing, and tone - is otherwise far above average. He elevates the book overall.

Factoring in the outstanding sound quality, this recording of 'Afraid Of The Dark' merits 8 stars out of 10. It's a fantastic listening option as a 'Plus' selection.. because - even with the deficiencies - it would actually rate a Credit if they asked for one.

I skipped a few chapters

Very thorough story, it goes off on unrelated branches about Kavorkian, etc. Liked the narrator, other than he pronounces "algae" as al-ga (think Lady GaGa) instead of al-gee, many, many times. It's mentioned a lot during the trial portion.
