Description
November 1831. After fleeing London in infamy more than two years prior, Lady Kiera Darby's return to the city is anything but mundane, though not for the reasons she expected. A gang of body snatchers is arrested on suspicion of imitating the notorious misdeeds of Edinburgh criminals Burke and Hare - killing people from the streets and selling their bodies to medical schools. Then Kiera's past - a past she thought she'd finally made peace with - rises up to haunt her.
All of London is horrified by the evidence that "burkers" are, indeed, at work in their city. The terrified populace hovers on a knife's edge, ready to take their enmity out on any likely suspect. And when Kiera receives a letter of blackmail, threatening to divulge details about her late anatomist husband's involvement with the body snatchers and wrongfully implicate her, she begins to apprehend just how precarious her situation is. Not only for herself, but also her new husband and investigative partner, Sebastian Gage, and their unborn child.
Meanwhile, the young scion of a noble family has been found murdered a block from his home, and the man's family wants Kiera and Gage to investigate. Is it a failed attempt by the London burkers, having left the body behind, or the crime of someone much closer to home?

An unveiling of emotions over intellect
We have all had those times in our lives when we know something intellectually and think we are prepared for it, but when the event actually happens it's a whole different experience. Gage had to face this in the last book and Kiera and Sebastian did so together in this one. I have enjoyed the whole Lady Darby series thus far but this book had a different appeal for me. We have heard before how abominably Sir Anthony had treated Kiera as well as Society to a lesser degree, but in this book we truly felt the horror of what it could be like for a lady in those times. There is a scene where Kiera is stuck in a coach and caught up in the maelstrom of the angry public about the child killings. I felt chills in my spine for her as it also reminded me of the French revolution and how people were pulled out of carriages and harmed. Kiera and Gage's relationship is a joy to watch as he will stand by her no matter what and she him. But watching Gage struggle with the raw unveiling of truths of Kiera's past and how he deals with those is pivotal for their future.
The crime they need to solve is interesting and puzzling. I liked it being set in London as the change in location that happens often in these books brings in a new fresh element each time. The descriptive prose from Kiera's perspective allows us to see everything with clarity. Anderley's back story was interesting, albeit sad and linked to the horrors of that time in England. I also like that in almost every book Kiera's loving and intrusive family appear and now Gage's, along with the servants and Jeffers they bring some much enjoyed comic relief. There is a wonderful plot twist towards the end I was very pleased about.
I think the narrator does a great job and is consistent in her voices and accents throughout all of the books. Top drawer novel. Thank you

Fantastic Listen
Once again the tail of Sébastien & Lady Darby was a fun listen and once again I had no idea of who done it. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good murder mystery and love story. Loved it!
