Tom Crean was the farmer’s son from Kerry who sailed on three major expeditions to the unknown Antarctic over a century ago. He served with both Captain Robert Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton, spent longer on the ice than either and outlived them both.
But Tom Crean returned to Ireland and never spoke about his exploits, taking his incredible story to the grave – until the publication of An Unsung Hero, which unearthed his story and saw him rightfully placed amongst the annals of the great explorers.

A tough Antarctic explorer you have forgotten...
Tom Crean accompanied Scott on his first and his last expedition to Antarctica and then accompanied Shackleton on his ill fated trip in 1914. Shackleton chose Crean to sail with him in the James Caird and then wanted him on the epic cross island hike on South Georgia. The dude was tough and he was also modest, taciturn, and a valued companion. This book offers an account of the three great British expeditions to the Antarctic with an emphasis on Crean's role. These stories never get old or tired. Well 'narrated' too.

Remarkable.
If you thought you understood toughness and perseverance, you are about to be amazed. This is a very well told story of an incredible man deserving of a more prominent place in the history of 20th century exploration. The narration complements the tale perfectly. Makes my top 10 all time list.

courage and tenacity
Outstanding story of survival and triumph under unbelievably hard conditions. narrator was perfect for this story.
