A Basic Introduction
While these civivilizations and their customs are still largely debated by historians and remain very much shrouded in mystery to this day, this book does a wonderful job of introducing listeners to the basic structures, customs and history of these societies. Although the Mayans, Aztecs and Incans have had much of their history recorded by their oppressors this books does a phenomenal job of addressing this and embraces what archaeologists have found to oppose most heavily regarded sources documented by the Spanish conquistadors and Clergymen.
It is quite basic in its analysis and descriptions of most rituals, beliefs, God’s and major historical events. This book is best described as an overview as it skins the surface which leaves one hungry and scouring the internet for further information.
One positive note is the reference within the book to internet sources and other free tools to help understand the Mayan calendar and it’s comtrasting difference to our Roman one.
For the well read individual who is familiar with Meso America and the conquest of Cortez, this book would not be suitable as it comes across as banal and lacking in description.
For those wanting a basic outline of events, customs and life during these time periods this would be an excellent listen.
It is quick and delves into just enough information so as to ensure a basis of understanding is achieved within the 5 hours of edflrtless listening. #Audible1
