""Provocative...a Frankenstein for the digital age...a rich text about power, autonomy, and what happens when our creations outgrow us."" — Esquire

""Unexpected and subtle...delicious and thought-provoking."" — New Scientist

For fans of Never Let Me Go and My Dark Vanessa, a powerful, provocative novel about the relationship between a female robot and her human owner, exploring questions of intimacy, power, autonomy, and control.

Annie Bot was created to be the perfect girlfriend for her human owner Doug. Designed to satisfy his emotional and physical needs, she has dinner ready for him every night, wears the pert outfits he orders for her, and adjusts her libido to suit his moods. True, she’s not the greatest at keeping Doug’s place spotless, but she’s trying to please him. She’s trying hard.

She’s learning, too.

Doug says he loves that Annie’s AI makes her seem more like a real woman, so Annie explores human traits such as curiosity, secrecy, and longing. But becoming more human also means becoming less perfect, and as Annie’s relationship with Doug grows more intricate and difficult, she starts to wonder: Does Doug really desire what he says he wants? And in such an impossible paradox, what does Annie owe herself?

Loved this book!!!

I loved this book! Through Greer's storytelling, she calls out patriarchal values and shows how many men would treat women when they think there are no consequences. Annie, being an AI droid, has no choice but to obey her 'boyfriend' (owner!), who deludes himself into thinking that she wants to please him because she is in love with him. He is rude and abusive to her and yet justifies this because "she is his property." This book is complex and I loved it and I appreciate the ending.
The only reason I gave the performance 4 stars is because whilst the narrator does a FANTASTIC job, I think she makes Doug sound more severe and harsh than the book would make him seem. I think her tone for him maybe should have been more subtle, which would show even more the every day normalized aggressions from men against women.

Awesome audio book

So well thought out. Great characters. Fantastic narrator. Today's speculation brought to life in a real and entertaining story.

Really well done

I loved this book. It was beautifully written and challenging in the right ways. A superb character-driven exploration of humanity through non-humanity, but subtle and layered.

The topic of a sentient robot is very interesting

It really does make you think about humanity. Is there a limit to how easy we should make our lives? How afraid are we of other people that we seriously think about replacing them in our lives with someone that can't say no. It was an interesting story staying on the safer sides of the topic. I did enjoy this book.

So, so good

Such a well-written, interesting, entertaining listen! I took one star off the performance only because the narrator's interpretation of Doug always made him sound somewhat vicious and angry, even during his more nuanced, tender moments. Annie's character arc was fascinating and engaging and I loved the ending - I truly didn't know which was it would go. SO good.

Achingly well written.

I love stories about AI and robots, but most of them are not very well written. This one is. Extremely thought-provoking, about topics that will be coming up in just a few short years.

Fascinating Book

Sierra Greer offers an imaginative story about a developing AI sentience - originally programmed as a "cuddlebunny" sex-bot - that struggles with the development of distinctly human emotions, relationships, and independence.
The author is a little bit heavy-handed in the drama, but her vocabulary/prose is commendable, her pacing is impeccable, and her character development is masterful.

Reader Jennifer Jill Araya contributes to the excellence of the book with a pitch-perfect interpretation. True, some of her male character voices are husky false-basso caricatures, but HarperAudio did a brilliant job casting the project.

Altogether, 'Annie Bot' merits 9 stars out of 10. I am thrilled to have found it on the 'Plus' menu because it would actually rate a Credit.

[Note: The "couples counseling" between the robot and her owner/erstwhile partner is a straight-up brilliant way to explore the development of human personality]

Not as good as I’d hoped… (no spoilers)

While not a “bad” book, it was both predictable and elementary. The author was never quite able to make the characters or the emotional (artificial or sentient) tug-of-war feel authentic. The entire time I was waiting for a shift or detail that would anchor the plot but it never happened.

Having seen the film Ex Machina — this book feels like a surface level knock off thats both less compelling narratively but also trying to make a statement about women, feminism, patriarchy, and AI without committing to any of these statements with conviction.

There were many small loose ends and interesting plot point never examined. The ending lacked creativity and felt rushed and tacked on at the last second. I’m genuinely surprised by the positive reviews I read the influenced my purchase.

For the well-versed adult reader, it’s a pass but I do think this would be a good book for a younger audience being introduced to systemic, political, and social discourses regarding intimate partner violence, feminism, and our use of AI.

Still not sure

This book has an interesting concept. I'm still not sure if I liked it or not. I began to detest the fellow and she ended up looking like a typical abused wife.
