À propos de cet audio
"I spent five years of my life being treated for cancer, but since then I've spent 15 years being treated for nothing other than looking different from everyone else. It was the pain from that, from feeling ugly, that I always viewed as the great tragedy of my life. The fact that I had cancer seemed minor in comparison."
At age nine, Lucy Grealy was diagnosed with a potentially terminal cancer. When she returned to school with a third of her jaw removed, she faced the cruel taunts of classmates. In this strikingly candid memoir, Grealy tells her story of great suffering and remarkable strength without sentimentality and with considerable wit. Vividly portraying the pain of peer rejection and the guilty pleasures of wanting to be special, Grealy captures with unique insight what it is like as a child and young adult to be torn between two warring impulses: to feel that more than anything else we want to be loved for who we are, while wishing desperately and secretly to be perfect.

But time was ticking…. I had Lucy’s biography in my library for free, courtesy of Audible Plus, and I only had a few days left to listen.
Yet I was sure of a tale of bravery was at hand, so I set forth to listen. It was all of that, and more. From age 9, Lucy endured horrendous surgeries, and suffered merciless teasing by fellow students for years. Children can be so cruel! Her only experiences of acceptance were on Halloween. Perhaps I was able to listen because her story began with the voice of a child.
Lucy finally found acceptance, kindness and expression at university. This was a heartening development that lifted my spirits.
At the point where Lucy’s book ends, she is waiting yet another surgery, but appears to be building a life for herself beyond the confines of hospital and home. Such courage! I was truly inspired.
Perhaps my biggest revelation arising from this book when I heard in the closing credits ~ something I barely pay attention to ~ that the book was published by her estate. Deflated, I Googled Lucy’s name. I had not only missed her rise to fame, but her tragic death in 2002.
That’s not all: I also learned that friend Ann Patchett published Truth & Beauty: A Friendship, about Lucy, a mere 18 months after she passed. Lucy’s family, understandably, found the timing intrusive on their grieving process. Wile I normally read everything I can on a subject, I am currently undecided as to when, or if, I will listen Patchett’s book.
