À propos de cet audio
Stephen R. Platt is widely respected for his incisive nonfiction, particularly in regard to his knowledge and understanding of China. With Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom, Platt details the absorbing narrative of the Taiping Rebellion, which resulted in the loss of 20 million lives. Occurring in the 1850s, this is the story of a cultural movement characterized by intriguing personages such as influential military strategist Zeng Guofan and brilliant Taiping leader Hong Rengan.

Intricate accounts of an often overlooked event in the Qing Dynasty
The books delves into the events and various perspectives of both Western (Brit, American) and Chinese (Qing, Taiping). Very complex sequences of events, while we know how they ended in hindsight, the paths were not nearly as clear cut during that process. This rebellion also has clear implications for the uprisings / rebellions after (Republic of China, CCP). Insightful read for a Chinese native who grew up being taught primarily the CCP version of events. In any case, Taiping Rebellion isn’t talked about nearly as much as the civil wars of the 20th century, or the opium war.
Slightly disappointing is the voice performance of this audiobook. While not lacking in intensity, the narration tends to be too high strung to listen to for more than 10-15 mins at a time. I felt like being disciplined by a school principal while listening to this. In comparison, I preferred the softer tone of Mark Deakin who narrated the Imperial Twilight by the same author. I will have to read this book in paper form now to revisit the parts I sped through.
