Auteur(s): Christine Dempsey
  • Résumé

  • From home brewing to microbreweries to local taprooms, craft beer is popular across the country and in the Lehigh Valley. Each week on WLVR’s Flight Club, host Christine Dempsey imbibes and tries out a craft brew mini-flight. Local and national offerings are on the flight paddle. In addition to sipping a beer, she spins a record from her vast vinyl collection to pair with the beverage.

  • Sip and Spin with Lil' Monger and Sandy Nelson
    Jul 31 2024

Drummer Sandy Nelson, came up with the instrumental song, Teen Beat, in 1959. The record sold over one million copies and reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the start of his solo record career that lasted until his last singles that were released in 1984. One this week’s Sip and Spin edition of Flight Club, we check out a few selections from Sandy Nelson’s 1968 release, Boogaloo Beat. Lots of the songs on the album include “Boogaloo” in the title – Mystery Boogaloo, Alligator Boogaloo, Boogaloo Down Broadway, Karate Boogaloo, and Buckaroo Boogaloo.

In addition to boogaloo-ing, we’ll be sipping something from Lansdale’s Well Crafted Beer Company. The Lil’ Monger is a Hazy Pale Ale, not to be confused with a Hazy India Pale Ale. The Lil’ Monger is a drinkable ale with lots of citrus flavors and a lower alcohol content than most IPAs. Our sponsors at Banko Beverage Co. introduced us to Well Crafted Beer and this beverage.

PS – Pro Tip: Hazy beer is brewed with grains that have higher protein content. So if you’re looking to boost your protein intake, a Hazy Beer may be for you!

  • Sip and Spin with Duclaw Brewing and Cal Tjader
    Jul 31 2024

It’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time! Duclaw Brewing (formerly of Baltimore, MD) has a new flavor in their Sweet Baby line of porters – Sweet Baby PB&J. It’s their Chocolate Peanut Butter porter base, with Raspberry. Christine will be sipping this while spinning a record from a jazz great. Cal Tjader was famous for masterful vibraphone playing and his Latin Jazz style of music. You’ll hear a couple of songs from his 1964 release “Soul Sauce.” Christine has recently discovered Tjader and started collecting his albums. She’s got 8 so far, but has a long way to go, Cal put out 70 albums!
