Mayhem reigns in the streets of London, vividly described by Dickens, and the innocent Barnaby Rudge is drawn into the thick of it. Against the public disorder, Dickens tells of the private discord within families - with fathers and sons at loggerheads - and creates a wealth of colourful characters: the sinuously evil Lord Chester; the pretty and vivacious Dolly Varden; and the host and regulars at the Maypole Inn - a symbol of security in those uncertain and violent times.

Masterful Tale

A dramatic tale masterfully told, with a broad cast of characters vividly drawn, and the whole complex story drawn up in highly polished form. Mr. Barrett “do the voices” in fine style.

Creative Genius Displayed Beautifully

An excellent story bursting with characters so vivid and uncannily like themselves as to be types. Dickens' language and tone are brimming with genius and beauty and good humour. The tale told is captivating, very dark at times (very light at others), and moving. As with much of Dickens, there may be points where the wordiness can make the story seem to drag for a moment, but it is well worth it to push through - the results are not only entertaining but ennobling. On top of all that, this reading of Sean Barrett's is absolutely exquisite; I recommend it without reservation.
