Fifteen-year-old Lina is a Lithuanian girl living an ordinary life - until Soviet officers invade her home and tear her family apart. Separated from her father and forced onto a crowded train, Lina, her mother, and her young brother make their way to a Siberian work camp, where they are forced to fight for their lives. Lina finds solace in her art, documenting these events by drawing. Risking everything, she imbeds clues in her drawings of their location and secretly passes them along, hoping her drawings will make their way to her father's prison camp. But will strength, love, and hope be enough for Lina and her family to survive? A moving and haunting novel perfect for fans of The Book Thief.

Could I still love and have hope under such wrenching circumstances?
Loved everything - characters, plot. Depiction of despair and hope, community and kindness. The resiliency of the human spirit.

watch out: spoiler alert
I really enjoyed this book, at least, right up to the end. I was SO disappointed that there was no information provided about their release!

A dark, yet compelling story of merit
I knew virtually nothing of the exille of the Baltic regions under Stalin at the onset of WWII. Ruta Sapetys does not euphemize-- this is the story of the brutallic treatment of Lithuanian exiles.
A complementary read to The Book Thief (though far more mature in content).
I didn't love the narration, unfortunately. I found the character's voices far too unnatural.
