When the women are visited by the Hoopoe, a sacred bird from Muslim and Celtic literature, they are compelled to question their relationships to faith and femininity, love, loyalty, and sacrifice.

Beautiful story of friendship and finding oneself

Aboulela writes with a gentle recognition of the complexity and contradictions within us and the resulting story of these three women coming to the acknowledge the ways in which they have neglected their relationships with self and identity, and the culminating realization of what is necessary to keep on is what makes this story worth the read.
