Rupert didn't especially want to be a prince. And he certainly never asked to be the second son of a royal line that really didn't need a spare. So he was sent out to slay a dragon and prove himself - a quest straight out of legend. But he also discovered the kinds of things legends tend to leave out, as well as the usual demons, goblins, the dreaded Night Witch - and even worse terrors hidden in the shadows of Darkwood. Rupert did find a fiery dragon - and a beautiful princess to rescue. But the dragon turned out to be a better friend than anyone back at the castle, and with the evil of Darkwood spreading, Rupert was going to need all the friends he could get.

The start in the middle
We listened to the 3rd book first and it didn't matter! the engaging story keeps you pulled in from the first chapter onwards

Predictable swords and sorcery epic, good char
Rupert is the second son of the king. That makes him extendable. So he gets sent off on missions where he probably won't come back. His brother the prince and heir apparent it's kind of a dick.
As with all epic fantasies there's a huge evil about to take over the world. They must fight against it. In this case it's the demon Prince, the deadline that they have to beat is the rising of the blue moon, and the expansion of the black forest is where the demons hang out.
What's this book a part is that while the Plot takes itself seriously the characters don't.There's a reasonable amount of court intrigue, and the characters interact well. I don't know if I'll pick up the next one or not because it seems like just more of the same but maybe

Great book, good narration
I first read this book a decade ago, and go back to it every year or two. The story is imaginative, well written, and paints a wider world the reader will be eager to explore by the book's end. The narration is well done, the voice is clear and easy to listen to.
