À propos de cet audio

In this “impressive debut” from award-winning speculative fiction author Nalo Hopkinson, a young woman must solve the tragic mystery surrounding her family and bargain with the gods to save her city and herself. (The Washington Post)

The rich and privileged have fled the city, barricaded it behind roadblocks, and left it to crumble. The inner city has had to rediscover old ways—farming, barter, herb lore. But now the monied need a harvest of bodies, and so they prey upon the helpless of the streets.

With nowhere to turn, a young woman must open herself to ancient truths, eternal powers, and the tragic mystery surrounding her mother and grandmother. She must bargain with gods, and give birth to new legends.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Hopkinson's writing is smooth and assured, and her characters lively and believable. She has created a vivid world of urban decay and startling, dangerous magic, where the human heart is both a physical and metaphorical key." (Publishers Weekly)

"An impressive debut precisely because of Hopkinson's fresh viewpoint."—The Washington Post

Reader was excellent but didn't quite nail all of the endings. Still a great, immersive listen.

it was a wonderful blend of Caribbean, African and especially surprising, Canadian culture and story telling. the characters were interesting and complex with very distinct personalities which is rarely seen nowadays. it also allows for adult characters to be more than pawns in a story, giving them a kind of agency rarely seen in modern literature.

Creolization Of Writing

The narrator mispronounces "premier" (as in the political leader of a Canadian province) as "premiere". One might think a professional would check on something like that- especially since the premier of the province is an important character who is referred to countless times. The plot is a little wooden but I loved the strong Caribbean cultural connection- it was a refreshing change from the usual Canadian fare.

Eh, it's not bad.

set in Toronto, blending the familiar with the strange; homeless, addicted, criminal bullies, politicians, resourceful community healers and organizers, there is more that is familiar than science fiction, but the spirit world brings both entertainment and wisdom to the story. at first I didn't like having a male reader but after awhile stopped noticing.

Pure pleasure

Love the dystopian and current and past cultural references. I couldn’t stop listening. Loved it.

Quit listening after 2 hours. My book club is reading this and it seems everyone feels the same way. It starts out with super clunky exposition, all tell and no show, and while that aspect improves slightly, the story in not engaging. The characters feel cookie cutter, the protagonist's emotional swings are nonsensical , and most scenes are built around narrative convenience. All in all, it feels like a spec fiction title by someone who has never read any spec fiction. World-building is an art, but Hopkinson seems to have missed the memo. Lastly, the reader is far below the standard I've come to expect from Audible.

How was this ever nominated for an award?
