Art Palmer, a shell-shocked cavalry officer, has retreated to the solitude and peace of the Appalachian mountains. Journeying to assist his widowed sister in Georgia, Art stops off in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a town of mixed loyalties in the recent conflict. While there he hears of the rise of the KKK, who are persecuting a fellow veteran, a mixed-race hero with a similar background to him. He should be on his way, but he can't leave the man to perish alone - it would be like running out on himself. Some wars never end.
