When a strange tear in the cosmos appears within Earth’s annual path, the consequences are disastrous. For one night a year, the vast majority of humans now undergo a frightening mental change, transforming into hateful, rage-fueled zombies who will stop at nothing to satiate their desire for brutality. While not much is understood about this horrific mass hysteria, the demographic it effects is very specific: cisgender straight people.

Iðunn is in yet another doctor's office. She knows her constant fatigue is a sign that something's not right, but practitioners dismiss her symptoms and blood tests haven't revealed any cause. When she talks to friends and family about it, the refrain is the same—have you tried eating better? exercising more? establishing a nighttime routine? She tries to follow their advice, buying everything from vitamins to sleeping pills to a step-counting watch. Nothing helps. Until one night Iðunn falls asleep with the watch on, and wakes up to find she’s walked over 40,000 steps in the night.

In an isolated chateau, as far north as north goes, the baron’s doctor has died. The doctor’s replacement has a mystery to solve: discovering how the Institute lost track of one of its many bodies. For hundreds of years the Interprovincial Medical Institute has grown by taking root in young minds and shaping them into doctors, replacing every human practitioner of medicine. The Institute is here to help humanity, to cure and to cut, to cradle and protect the species from the apocalyptic horrors their ancestors unleashed.

Sixteen-year-old trans boy Benji is on the run from the cult that raised him—the fundamentalist sect that unleashed Armageddon and decimated the world’s population. Desperately, he searches for a place where the cult can’t get their hands on him, or more importantly, on the bioweapon they infected him with. But when cornered by monsters born from the destruction, Benji is rescued by a group of teens from the local Acheson LGBTQ+ Center, affectionately known as the ALC. The ALC’s leader, Nick, is gorgeous, autistic, and a deadly shot, and he knows Benji’s darkest secret.

Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Wonderful!
This was a delightful listen!!
I saw Chuck promoting this so I preordered for support. I wasn't sure I'd like this. I'd seen conversion therapy horror before, and I wasn't loving it. But in an amazing venture outside of Mr. Tingle's usual genre, Camp Damascus had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Paced well, with great characters and packed full of gorgeous (and gruesome!) imagery, I'd recommend giving this book to anyone on the fence about it. I hope to see more books in this genre from Chuck Tingle in the future!

fantastic piece of queer horror
Very likeable and believable characters, unapologetically queer, and offers a great sense of creeping unease that morphs into horror. Absolutely loved it.

Wonderful!
A highly enjoyable story, incredibly well written. It truly captures the neurodivergent thought process. I really felt connected to the characters and found elements of the story quite relatable. The person dictating carries the mood very well.

everything I hoped it would be
This book proves love is real, as our man Chuck might say. Engaging, exciting, and scary as heck! I quite literally pumped my fists in the air during the final climactic battle scene.
Rose is the autistic coded queer heroine I have always wanted to see in fiction.
Mara Wilson does a wonderful job narrating. The OG Matilda - a true buckaroo, if there ever was one.

Fantastic!
I'd heard of this author before, so I was very intrigued about what this book would be like, and I have to say I am so happy I gave it a go. Its a very interesting take on cults, religion, and how people will lie to themselves for "the greater good." I totally recommend it!

Excellent
Hoped there would be even more horror elements to it but when you think of the horrors LGBTQIA+ people face daily from religious persecution, it truly is a horrifying novel. Well written and the desperation and love of the characters for each other is palpable. They do an excellent job of really showing how painful it can be to grow up believing something so fiercely and when confronted with the fact that the ideas are hate based and your identity is questioned, it’s really difficult to grasp where you stand in the world. A great read.

Frustratingly good
I've never in my life read a chuck tingle book. but this book makes me want to read more of his work. he is an amazingly talented writer with weirdly poetic writing and skill for foreshadowing. while others often broadcast things too much Tingle can slip in an off hand comment ad something coming later that fits so well.
the story itself is horrific and grotesque at times and beautifully loving at others. deeply philosophical and scientifically at the same time. I wasn't sure I would like this but I really loved it by the end. it truely deserves to be made into a movie it's wonderful

A unique and thrilling story with spectacular narration. Tingle's love for allophony combined with Mara Wilson's narration sucks you right in and doesn't let you go. Satisfying ending with a good balance of the explained and the unexplained. Five stars!

Thanks, Chuck!
Didn't think I'd ever see myself so clearly in a Chuck Tingle book, but man. It's about time that someone unpacks how scary it is to be gay and autistic in a world that tells you that you are the worst thing their child could turn out to be.

Masterful and compelling
If you, like me, grew up on a steady diet of Frank Peretti novels, youth group mission trips, and prayer for those who’d backslid, you’ll completely get this masterfully terrifying novel. The main character is very relatable for a neurodiverse reader. The characters are fleshed out and real. I couldn’t stop listening as the tension grew. I truly have nothing bad to say about this book. It’s fantastic, a must-read. Oh also it’s gay as hell. This buckaroo approves a thousand-fold!
