À propos de cet audio
Brought to you by Penguin.
Winston Churchill towers over every other figure in 20th-century British history. By the time of his death at the age of 90 in 1965, many thought him to be the greatest man in the world.
There have been over a thousand previous biographies of Churchill. Andrew Roberts now draws on over 40 new sources, including the private diaries of King George VI, used in no previous Churchill biography, to depict him more intimately and persuasively than any of its predecessors. Masterfully narrated by Stephen Thorne, this audiobook in no way conceals Churchill's faults, and it allows the listener to appreciate his virtues and character in full: his titanic capacity for work (and drink), his ability see the big picture, his willingness to take risks and insistence on being where the action was, his good humour even in the most desperate circumstances, the breadth and strength of his friendships and his extraordinary propensity to burst into tears at unexpected moments. Above all, it shows us the wellsprings of his personality - his lifelong desire to please his father (even long after his father's death) but aristocratic disdain for the opinions of almost everyone else, his love of the British Empire, his sense of history and its connection to the present.
During the Second World War, Churchill summoned a particular scientist to see him several times for technical advice. 'It was the same whenever we met', wrote the young man. 'I had a feeling of being recharged by a source of living power.' Harry Hopkins, President Roosevelt's emissary, wrote, 'Wherever he was, there was a battlefront.' Field Marshal Sir Alan Brooke, Churchill's essential partner in strategy and most severe critic in private, wrote in his diary, 'I thank God I was given such an opportunity of working alongside such a man, and of having my eyes opened to the fact that occasionally such supermen exist on this earth.'

Incredible
Absolutely phenomenal book. It's comprehensive, not skipping any major plotlines of Churchill's life. The writing isn't as complicated as I was expecting making it easy to follow along while doing other tasks. The narrator was enthusiastic and performed the characters with an energy usually lacking in audiobooks.
Churchill was one of the last great men to walk this earth. The deeds performed by him and the men around him will never be rivaled. It's sad that his fight for liberty, a war that never ceased, was eventually lost. The world we live in now is a baren wasteland of mass censorship and socialist/communist idealogies.

Possibly the best Churchill
I dare say that this is the best Churchill biography I’ve read. It is a true page-turner. The author humanizes Churchill, exploring all of his actions within the context of his underlying fears and weaknesses. We are talking everything from his early need for parents’ love and approval to the constant fear of dying before the age of 40, and then to his later financial troubles and unyielding taste for fine champagne and silk boxers. The narrator does a very good job too, accents included.

Winston Churchill Audible Book
Outstanding account of Churchill ‘s life and times. The Narrator while quoting Churchill did an imitation of WLSC and that was quite entertaining as well as informative. Recommend this highly ,a story of a great man who now in present day has been slandered with falsehoods an lies by communists. With myths and untruths that the narrator debunks with facts. Great book !

Wonderful
The writing and research are top notch. The narration by Stephen Thorne is superb. Unashamedly, it brought me to tears. It does an exceptional job of portraying a titan of the 20th century in an objective manner without too much bias.

Second best book on here so far
Only the Count of Monte Cristo has been better. I can't wait to listen to this again one day. What a truly great man. We could learn a lot from him today with Russia and China...

Realistic and interesting
The common strategy of Churchill biographers is to focus on his great accomplishments in WW2. And the struggle that led up to it. Andrew Roberts does that also, but in addition, he reveals lesser known details of Churchill’s family life, the ups and downs in his relationships with long time friends and political opponents, and little known dislikes of historical colleagues such as general Eisenhower and Lord Beaverbrook. In this biography Churchill is portrayed as the indomitable force against Hitlet that he was, but also as a real person with faults, temper tantrums and sometimes strangely naive beliefs. This is an interesting and realistic book with access to documents that have not been previously available to biographers. Well worth it.
