Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is one of several types of personality disorders. NPD is a mental condition in which those affected have a deep need for excessive admiration and attention, a lack of empathy for others, an inflated sense of their own importance, and troubled relationships. However, while it may be hard to notice, there often lies a fragile self-esteem that is vulnerable to even the slightest amount of criticism, hidden under the mask of extreme overconfidence.
A narcissistic parent will try to prioritize their needs over everyone else’s. This can often show itself through breaking agreements or pushing boundaries. It is difficult to deal with a narcissist because not only do they have a lack of empathy, but they also have a deep tendency to push back with defensiveness, anger, and criticism.
