À propos de cet audio

She's lost everything, except her life....

Lieutenant Lorraine Page once had everything - a devoted husband, two beautiful daughters and an impressive career with the Homicide Squad. It's impossible to believe that she could be thrown out of the police force and end up on Skid Row.

Without Lorraine, her colleagues struggle on, as the hunt for a nightmare serial killer spirals into an all-out search for a missing witness: a victim who escaped.

But Lorraine Page is about to be brought right back into that world again. Against her will she is drawn into the investigation and forced to face her past and her overwhelming guilt....

Based on a true story, the complete and unabridged Lorraine Page trilogy available for the first time in audio.

I Appreciate True-To-Life Characters but...

Lynda La Plante's protagonist in this novel isn't hard-luck/damaged/troubled.. she's straight-up *unlikable*. The Publisher's Summary states that La Plante based her chief character on an actual Police Detective.. but she should have chosen better inspiration (it's hard to write a captivating Crime Thriller when your readers/listeners could not care less what happens to the "hero").
The 'Lorraine Page' character starts off a *total* mess - a drunk, an absent parent, and an actual child-murderer who was never prosecuted.. and cleans up but never really shows any redeeming features. Excuse me if I don't cheer her on.

Don't get me wrong: notwithstanding my visceral dislike for Lieutenant Page (even sober, she's insufferably self-centred), her investigative curiosity and intuition are admirable. La Plante further provides "adequate" mystery-thriller entertainment in 'Cold Shoulder'.. with a realistic, gritty story about the hunt for a violent serial killer of prostitutes. She then populates it with the fascinating underbelly of Los Angeles society.

Unfortunately, the errors in this book are compounded with cringeworthy voice-acting (Laurence Bouvard's interpretation of children is particularly eardrum-bursting shrill). This is honestly some of the worst narration I have ever heard (and I have listened to Hundreds of Audiobooks - check out my Listener Page).
I also need to warn you that - should you decide to try the book - volume-levelling by editors at Zaffre Publishing is essentially non-existent. That normally wouldn't be much of an issue - but Bouvard actually SHOUTS some dialogue.
IF YOU VALUE YOUR MIDDLE EAR OSSICLES, DO NOT LISTEN WITH EARBUDS!!

When literally painful performance is added to genuinely weak writing, we get a 1.5/10 star audiobook. Even for free, this book is a waste of time. Avoid.

DNF

The narration is awful and there's nothing redeeming about the story. I won't waste my time even if the book is free

Appallingly dated

The plot involves transgendered characters. The author depicts them as depraved, freakish, immoral and disgusting. She uses out-dated terminologies; such as, “ transvestite” and “trans-sexual”. A character who identifies as female is terrorized and threatened with imprisonment in the men’s ward if she won’t confess to killing her lover. The book was published in 1994; which happens to be the year my daughter was born. She recently announced that she is gender-fluid. It was brave of her and it was an emotional moment. And yet, I recall being relieved that she was born in this day and age. Of course, there are still people who will not accept or acknowledge that we are all born on a gender-spectrum. Even so, we can generally expect her rights to be respected and protected. I’m disappointed that any effort whatsoever was put into publishing this audio book in 2019; since, by then, the perpetuation of the “perverted” transgender stereotype and the use of descriptors like “transsexual” were already acknowledged as profoundly hurtful. I expected so much more of the author.

TERRIBLE narration

I would give the performance “0” stars if possible. This was a horrible, no good, very bad Audible book. I couldn’t get past the first chapter and still I hear the unpleasant voices in my head. If it had been a movie, I would have walked out of the theatre.
