À propos de cet audio

Contains books one and two of the Cyborg Corps series.

Cyborg Corps, book 1

Warren Prescott is a veteran amputee who can’t catch a break. When the VA calls him in for an experimental procedure to restore his leg, he is amazed. Finally, he will be able to feel the warm sand beneath his feet again - or so the doctor promises. Too bad it was all a lie.

The next time Warren opens his eyes, four centuries have passed. Somehow, he’s standing in the middle of a battlefield, stuck on a distant alien planet, far away from home. To make matters worse, his body appears to be entirely synthetic. He’s a cyborg, nearly indestructible and enhanced for extreme combat.

With centuries of time missing from his memory and no idea how to get home, Warren is left with no choice but to fight against those who would see him enslaved, and free as many of his brothers as possible along the way.

Built to Last, book 2

The shackles have been broken. The war for freedom has begun. Warren's new colony has become an oasis in a war-torn galaxy, but new enemies and a distant call for help threaten to wrench peace from his grasp.

As more cyborgs are discovered throughout the galaxy, the fight for freedom expands beyond the colony of Reotis. Warren's search for answers grows, along with his thirst for independence.

He will not be made a slave ever again. He vows to live, to survive, to rebel. No matter the cost.

Cool Futuristic Military-Flavored Story Well-executed

J.N. Chaney and Christopher Winder offer a story about a rebelling group of dozens of advanced soldiers created in the vein of 'Robocop' (guys injured in the line of duty and "volunteered" into service with the 'Grand Republic'/Empire by having armor/weapons/sensors - and computer systems - fused to their bodies):

• In the first book ('Cyborg Corps'), we are introduced to 'Warren Prescott', accidentally having his pre-initiation memories restored in a reboot after 400 years in the Corps. He then proceeds on a revolt (basically succeeding where the Rutger Hauer character 'Roy Batty' in 'Bladerunner' had failed) - fighting to establish a Cyborg colony of supersoldiers on a captured planet.
It reads like a poorly-paced but well-planned/well-executed SciFi action-adventure.
• Book 2 ('Built To Last'), finds the Commonwealth Of Worlds (COW) - a rapidly-expanding nonImperial force in autocratic control of Warren's sector - attacking the fledgling Cyborg society in the Colony 'Reotis' with advanced AI & a previously unknown type of cyborg.
The book is infuriatingly slow in revelations (there is far too much "What is going on here?" musings in Inner Dialogues), but also includes some well-choreographed hand-to-hand combat & truly cinematic battles.

Bottom Line: the ideas behind the books are derivative (these authors borrow pretty heavily from stuff you've heard before), and the pacing is inadequate (loooong stretches where nothing happens followed by breakneck, quickly-resolved action), but there's enough of the "good" to justify the time investment.

As to presentation: Jeffrey Kafer turns in a "capable" performance backed up by exemplary technical support from Podium Audio Inc. I personally find Kafer's typical "LOUD-quietly mumbled-LOUD-quietly mumbled" reading cadence between dialogue and text - especially during conversations - initially amusing but eventually mildly irritating (sorry.. you now won't be able to unhear it since I've pointed it out). Add to that the fact that he's much better listened to at 1.10X, and we have a "serviceable" listening product. The prolific Mr. Kafer was a great choice, mind you (there are plenty of good reasons why he gets lots of work) - but he doesn't do anything on this project that another professional couldn't have done.

Altogether (If you are able to set aside reservations), this is a fun book compendium that merits 7.5 stars out of 10. I won't personally be going further with the series, but you would be justified in doing so if it grabs you.
'Cyborg Corps: Publisher's Pack' was easily worth the time investment as a 'Plus' option.. and may even rate a Credit for fans of "imaginative fan-fiction"-type Fantasy-SciFi stories.

Really great storyline, and a great narrator as well.

This was a phenomenal audio book!…..where’s book, 3,4 and 5!

Someone yells near the end of the second book: we can’t sustain this!
Yeah, I’m thinking these two Authors were yelling that at each other as they wrestled over a draft of the third book. One holding up a hard copy of war and peace and the other one a hard cover of the great world atlas circa 1970. Both trying to push each other against a wall. Well there went books 3,4 and 5. Damn.
