London and Hampshire, 1777: The story of Alisdair "Dair" Fitzstuart, nobleman, ex-soldier, and rogue, and Aurora "Rory" Talbot, spinster, pineapple fancier, and granddaughter of England's Spymaster General, and how they fall in love.

This couple is so lovely. You can listen/read the series out of order but it is so much more captivating when done in order. Dair is a layered character, one who has had to deal with various traumas, from war to childhood trauma inflicted by his damaged parents. Rory, being the granddaughter of England's Spymaster who loves her, has been given every opportunity to have as normal a life as possible despite her club foot, which makes her flawed in society's eyes and both her parents being dead.

As per usual, the side characters (Rory's brother/Dair's best friend, her sister-in-law Drucilla and her brother Weasel, The Banks family and his batman Ferrier all add to the little and big moments in the book. But this is the Roxton family series, so in her own way, Antonia is the gentle force behind everyone, and the presence of the late Monsignor and Valentines touches the story. I love how Lucinda writes so many little moments and glimpses into everyone. Also Lucinda is consistent. With all the people, places and events her books you;d think a detail would get missed or confused but it doesn't. On the re-listen to Mary's story.
