But all hope is not lost. The Primarch Roboute Guilliman has returned from deathless sleep and appointed Commander Dante, lord of the Blood Angels, as Regent and Warden of the newly dubbed Imperium Nihilus.
In the Baal system, the shattered holding of the Chapter is being rebuilt, and Dante plans the greatest campaign of his long life, to retake half an empire. And yet at this moment of rebirth there are dangers close to home that could overwhelm all those who carry the blood of Sanguinius in their veins, stopping Dante's noble endeavour before it has even begun.
The Flaw in Sanguinius’ sons is growing. As the twin curses of the Red Thirst and the Black Rage threaten everything, the hardest ordeal will fall upon Mephiston, twice-born Lord of Death and Chief Librarian of the Blood Angels. Great book about The Blood Angels
if you're a fan of The Blood Angels this is a great listen. This story takes place immediately after the events of Devastation of Baal and devels into Dante's backstory a bit.

Long introduction, but good sequel.
This book is an alright sequel to the Devestation of Baal and the other Blood Angels novels by Guy Haley. It starts off really slowly, leading you to think when are the two main characters going to show up? However, it builds up suspense and rewards you in the end with a good story.

4 storylines, 2 good endings.
This book follows 4 principle characters: Dante, Mephiston, a High Admiral, and Dante (again).
Dante's main plot revolves around his age, and his difficulty in fulfilling his duties as regent of the Imperium Nihilus. It is the most complete plotline in the book, and ends up being most interesting.
Mephiston's story arc is about him losing control of his formidable psychic power and how the only solution is to become a primaris marine. The entire subplot is relegated to a C-tier until it reaches its climax and shoves every other plot backstage until it finishes. While a neat look at the process of becoming Primaris, it feels like it was shoehorned into this book as it meshes poorly with the other 3 plotlines.
The high admiral's story revolves around dealing with severe PTSD and how it is affecting his ability to command the fleet Dante has managed to cobble together. When Dante realizes the admiral's situation he attempts to help him over his issues by telling him anecdotes from his long career (see below). This storyline has the most potential to be interesting but is squandered by Mephiston destroying the pacing, and a monumentally unsatisfactory conclusion.
Dante's other plot is a flashback of the events leading up to becoming the Chapter Master. This is where most of the standard Space Marine bolter porn can be found. It works well, tying into half the other plotlines, and is pretty satisfying as bolter porn.
Overall a decent follow up to the Devastation of Baal, though I cannot stress enough how Mephiston's story feels like it doesn't belong in this particular novel.

promises were broken
There's not much I can say without spoilers, so let me just say that one characters arc Judy sort of ends. It felt like more was promised with them, but it never comes to anything. Other than that, the book was fine. Maybe a bit pulpy, but if that's what you're looking for, it doesn't have to be a bad thing.
