À propos de cet audio

"I didn't want to go to America, I didn't want to work for Darkey White. I had my reasons. But I went."

So admits Michael Forsythe, an illegal immigrant escaping the troubles in Belfast, Northern Ireland. But young Michael is strong and fearless and clever, just the fellow to be tapped by Darkey, a crime boss, to join a gang of Irish thugs struggling against the rising Dominican powers in Harlem and the Bronx. The time is pre-Giuliani New York, when crack rules the city, squatters live furtively in ruined buildings, and hundreds are murdered each month. Michael and his lads tumble through the streets, shaking down victims, drinking hard, and fighting for turf, block by bloody block.

Dodgy and observant, not to mention handy with a pistol, Michael is soon anointed by Darkey as his rising star. Meanwhile Michael has very inadvisably seduced Darkey's girl, Bridget, saucy, fickle, and irresistible. Michael worries that he's being followed, that his affair with Bridget will be revealed. He's right to be anxious; when Darkey discovers the affair, he plans a very hard fall for young Michael, a gambit devilish in its guile, murderous in its intent.

But Darkey fails to account for Michael's toughness and ingenuity or the possibility that he might wreak terrible vengeance upon those who would betray him.

A natural storyteller with a gift for dialogue, McKinty introduces to readers a stunning new noir voice, dark and stylish, mythic and violent, complete with an Irish lilt.

More magic

Another amazing book from Adrian McKinty, His poetic style of describing a scene, creation of broken characters that you find yourself pulling for, amazing plot with twists and turns right until the very end. A must read for anyone Interested in the mystery thriller genre.

I was sucked in from the beginning

I don’t know what to say. This is a totally enthralling story from beginning to the absolute end. Michael Forsythe is such a good character and McKinty writes like a poet. I binged this in about 2 days and highly recommend.

Wow!

For two days I did NOTHING but listen to this book. I was kidnapped right from the first chapter. The intricacies and details made the story real and compelling. Gerard Doyle's performance was stellar; loved the accents! He made me feel the anger, the pain, the frustration of the characters.

Mr. McKinty has created a fascinating character in Michael Forsythe. I kept forgetting that Michael was just a boy who had not yet sorted out who and what he was. Necessity forced many of his decisions and made for a whiplash adventure. I couldn't decide if he was a good guy or a bad guy. No matter. Adrian McKinty and Michael Forsythe were superb. I look forward to the next book by this wonderful wordsmith.

All About The Style

Adrian McKinty isn't the best at plotting or providing action/intrigue.. but the often tongue-In-cheek commentary from Irish expat criminal 'Michael Forsythe' during his dead-serious, violent adventures largely makes up for the deficiencies in story quality. Incongruent laugh-out-loud sarcasm and off-the-cuff Gaelic-infused observations from a questionably ethical reluctant mob assassin transform a middling Suspense Thriller about betrayal & murderous revenge into an above-average entertaining diversion.

As to presentation: Gerard Doyle is the perfect reader for McKinty's words. Blackstone Audio Inc. cast the project with a native Irishman who portrays the protagonist flawlessly - but also performs American & Mexican & Russian accents (among others) with impressive accuracy. Doyle occasionally falls into a formulaic Éire lilting cadence, but this is a commendable recording overall.

Altogether, 'Dead I May Well Be' merits 8 stars out of 10. It's not quite good enough to prompt me to continue the series, but I am thrilled that I discovered it on the 'Plus' menu.. because it would rate a Credit.

[NOTE: The language in this book is strikingly salty. McKinty drops F-bombs like nothing I've ever seen - but the expletives are almost musical when delivered with an Irish Brogue. Regardless, be aware if you're listening near youngsters]
