À propos de cet audio

In the words of Lee Child on Gone to Dust, “I want more of Nils Shapiro.” New York Times best-selling and Emmy Award-winning author Matt Goldman happily obliges by bringing the Minneapolis private detective back for another thrilling stand-alone adventure in Dead West.

Nils Shapiro accepts what appears to be an easy, lucrative job: find out if Beverly Mayer’s grandson is foolishly throwing away his trust fund in Hollywood, especially now, in the wake of his fiancée’s tragic death. However, that easy job becomes much more complicated once Nils arrives in Los Angeles, a disorienting place where the sunshine hides dark secrets.

Nils quickly suspects that Ebben Mayer’s fiancée was murdered, and that Ebben himself may have been the target. As Nils moves into Ebben’s inner circle, he discovers that everyone in Ebben’s professional life - his agent, manager, a screenwriter, a producer - seems to have dubious motives at best.

With Nils' friend Jameson White, who has come to Los Angeles to deal with demons of his own, acting as Ebben’s bodyguard, Nils sets out to find a killer before it’s too late.

I couldn’t even focus on the story because the narrator aged Shapiro into a 60 year old man. I’d just fallen in love with Shapiro and binged the rest of the series with the other narrator so this was a jarring change and totally threw off the image I had crafted in my mind of Shapiro, who was late 30s/early 40s with complexities and skills to bed the odd female character. This new Shapiro is much older with absolutely no edge. He’s a mild mannered yet irritated grandpa. Super disappointed in this one.

Miss the old narrator

Excellent narrator for this book , could imagine exactly what the characters should look like, enjoyed it very much!

Very good book in the series of detective Shapiro

My issue was with the narration. Apparently Bronson Pinchot is used a lot by Audible. He has a talent for voices but he overdid it here. Granted, Goldman treats the Los Angeles characters in a fairly two dimensional way, but Bronson brings some of them to a cartoonish extreme. The narrator should be the facilitator, not the focus. I found myself sometimes listening to him instead of listening to the story.

A departure in style from other Nils Shapiro

I've really enjoyed the Nils books BUT I have to agree with other commentors. Meadows was great for the story, brought life to the characters with a real Minnesota flavor. Changing the narrator for this book was questionable. Maybe Meadows wasn't available, whatever, should've done whatever it took to get him back. Everything about the characters was different so it detracted from the story. Maybe this book was as good as the others, but sure didn't seem like it. I hope there are more of these detective stories with Mark Meadows back as the narrator. If not, will likely move on, unfortunately. We need that Minnesota charm back. Okay? Soo, let's gooo.

Well.....

I love this narrator he really brings the story to life. The story is full of mystery, humor, mayhem and murder, with a few laugh out loud moments thrown in for good measure.
The only issues I had were some of the voices were too low to hear without adjusting the volume.
Overall I would recommend this book to readers as a cozy mystery that moved to the shadier, sexier side of town.

Loved it!

I absolutely loved the series and blew through all 4 books in a week. This was my least favorite because everything changed. The narrator wasn't the same so it seemed like a totally different person even though he referenced the previous books, the voices, the pace of speaking and the inflections he made with his voice all contributed to detaching the Nils in this book from the Nils in previous books from the series.

I liked the book and the style of writing but preferred when things are in his hometown and with his team.

least favorite of the Nils Shapiro Series

the story was not as entertaining as the first 3 but the narrator was awful. I really don't enjoy it when the narrator is switched mid series and this book amplified my distaste by 100. I was a absolutely struggle to get threw this one... God awful.

do not waste your time

I'm sure most people find it annoying when there is a narrator change in the middle of a series.
Mr. Pinchot took Nils to another level of an aloof attitude that was over done. Also I could not hear or understand a word that Jamieson said. Very frustrating.

Missed it by that much.

I found the story still worth following but the narrator was stiff and too fast. I missed the Shap from before - like a whole new character. it got better as the story progressed.

it was quite different from the previous 3 books

I prefer the other narrator. This narrator was ok but the original narrator is better. A bit hard to distinguish the voices or they sounded the same. Especially the woman’s voice.

Read all the books in the series.
