À propos de cet audio

In her three previous novel appearances, attorney Barbara Holloway has taken on the sort of cases no one else wants: hopeless messes, all of them. But with the help of her father, Frank, she has pulled through each time. Even from the start, though, this new case is different.

Mitch Arno always meant bad news for the coastal town of Folsum, Oregon. When they ran him out of town 17 years ago, he left behind a wife with two daughters and a family that never wanted to see him again. When he returns, he brings trouble in the form of a lot of suspicious money. As Barbara attempts to counsel Mitch's wife about the money, a second form of trouble arrives: Mitch's corpse. Now Barbara is in a morass of conflicting interests, and the only way out could lead her straight into the arms of the devil.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Wilhelm's skill in spinning out endless complications while keeping every subplot perfectly clear makes this legal thriller her best in years." (Kirkus Reviews)

I quite like the Barbara Holloway character. She's whip-smart, an überethical lawyer, and a realistic daughter, friend, and girlfriend. Unfortunately, in this episode of the series, Kate Wilhelm paints her as something of a b**ch much of the time. She's moody, overly vulnerable, and frequently crosses the line between ground-in-reality and pessimistic.
Wilhelm also includes multiple (*multiple*!) inexplicable gun-fuelled action sequences.
This story still isn't "bad" per se, but not up to Wilhelm's standards.

On the good side of the ledger, Blackstone Audio Inc. shifted from using Anna Fields to read the Holloway books to Carrington McDuffie (listed as "Full Cast" for this recording product by Audible for some reason) - a truly commendable narrator.

Altogether, 'Defense for the Devil' merits a disappointing 5 stars out of 10. It was a reasonable legal thriller as a 'Plus' option (and advances the sweeping overall character development if you're in love with the central character and her dad's silly little kittens).. but you should avoid spending a Credit on it if asked.

[Note: I really wish Wilhelm could do a better job of getting to the meat of these books: the on-the-stand questioning and testimony of the trials. The author is average at buildup but unsurpassed at courtroom drama]
