Description
The war is over. Earth is lost. Running is the only option. And it may already be too late.
Caleb is a former Marine Raider and commander of the Vultures, a search and rescue team that's spent the last two years pulling high-value targets out of alien-ravaged cities and shipping them off-world.
When his new orders call for him to join 40,000 survivors aboard the last starship out, he thinks his days of fighting are over. The Deliverance represents a fresh start and a chance to leave the war behind for good.
Except the war won't be as easy to escape as he thought.
And the colony will need a man like Caleb more than he ever imagined.
Enter the universe of the Forgotten with Deliverance, the first book in the Forgotten Colony series. If you're a fan of Aliens, Battlestar Galactica, Starship Troopers, Ender's Game, or Edge of Tomorrow, you'll love this epic military sci-fi thriller.

Not great, not bad.
Seemed disjointed with several large plot holes. Characterization was minimal, especially in light of the length of the work.

Fan fiction with no sense of pacing
This story lurches from one crisis to the next with no sense of pacing, story telling or character development. The god in the machine must have been getting awfully tired by the end, constantly pulling the next non sequitur out.

Unique Take On First Contact/Military SciFi
Earth lost. Now what?
Hordes of vicious, aggressive insectile creatures known as 'Trife' (something like an amalgam of the Zerglings in the game 'Starcraft' and the Xenomorphs in 'Aliens') have overrun the planet.
A United States Space Force colony ship is joining sixteen other spacecraft from all over the planet to relocate the human remnants to planet 'Proxima'.
M.R. Forbes provides a well-written, adequately-paced establishment story in a setting that promises some interesting plotlines. This first episode follows - in turn - a ranking military commander ('Adam') struggling to establish order on the 'USSF Deliverance', a mid-level marine sergeant (Caleb') leading soldiers in a violent battle with the Trife, and a desperate teenaged stowaway ('David') who found his way onto the ship prior to launch. The majority of the book is a description of violent encounter after violent encounter but - although they're glaringly two-dimensional - the characters are interesting enough for a creditable exploration of motivations. To be certain, this is an action-heavy story.. but it isn't a straight shoot-em-up. There are definitely some thought-provoking qualities.
Less fortuitously, Jeffrey Kafer sounds oddly disinterested on this project. To be sure, his diction and timbre are characteristically excellent - and his voice-acting remains peerless - but he reads with an undeniable monotone for some reason. The lack of emotiveness is noticeable.
Altogether, despite slightly subpar delivery, this is a commendable first book for an indisputably original series idea. There isn't much "hard" science to the story, but I rate the audiobook 7.5 stars out of 10.
It's actually disappointing that Audible is removing it from the 'Plus' catalogue.. because it leaves listeners with a tough decision. For certain there are better options for a Credit (I recommend Dennis E. Taylor, in particular, for similar fare executed better), but this book is good enough that it would likely be worth it for most SciFi fans.

action packed
Never a dull moment. I don't usually go for military sci-fi, but this action-packed sci-fi was a nice surprise. The audible version is well executed - the narrator kept a good pace, and is very good at relaying the tense moments.

I made it to chapter 23
A near-constant massacre between aliens and marines, occasionally punctuated by glacial advances of the plot.
I have been listening to similar sauce operas, but none as perpetually violent as this.

overwrought melodrama
Terrible writing and the narrator is so intent on sounding like a tough guy he verges on unintentional self-satire. I generally like space operas, they are my guilty pleasure. But this is simply awful
