Henry and Jason led normal lives in Seattle before they were abducted to another world. Their kidnapper, the vain, self-styled god Dolos, refuses to send them back unless they can accomplish an impossible task. Oddly, Dolos doesn't seem to care if they succeed or not.
Luckily, Henry and Jason studied Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) on Earth. Unfortunately, a Japanese American EMT and a geeky IT programmer don't have many other useful skills on a sword-and-sorcery world like Ludus.
Stranded in the middle of nowhere on an alien world, the friends have no real direction and only a few possessions including magic-granting orbs from an apathetic god. Undaunted, the two begin their insane adventure to return home...but basic survival and eventually paying rent will have to take priority.

Underrated
This was a very good story and I think its greatly underrated in the LITRPG world. The world is excellent and the female characters are actually real people, not simply sex objects. It doesn't sugar coat anything and I appreciate the HEMA references.
Overall, it's an excellent book and I would recommend any fantasy and LITRPG fan to get it. Narration by Jef was fantastic as always.

Great adventure and a fun read.
The narration is excellent and the story is good and interesting. The magic world and how it works is very original. Some immature things but not too many. Definitely worth a credit.

Awesome first book
I’ve listened to this series when it came out and decided to revisit it since Blaise is working on The sequels again soon. This series was a big part of getting me hooked on the litrpg genre and I can say after a few years and relistening to it again that it holds up. Henry and Jason are solid characters in a story. They’re very different people but meet well together in many aspects as well. I don’t really have anything to negative to say about this book. Infact it’s one my first books I recommend to people starting this genre.

seriously. good. read. characters are flushed out, see growth throughout the story and the same with the aide characters.
Hayes always hits the narration out of the park too.

Not for me
I really tried to enjoy it, but I tapped out with 6 hours left. Love Jeff Hayes, but even his narration couldn't save it. The concepts are familiar fantasy, gamelit, isekai-esque things with unique names put on them. Trope-y but that is fine.
I found the characters very grating, and had me cringing at points. It feels as if I am listening to someones power fantasy they are trying to make less obvious that it is their power fantasy. Like a game of D&D with poorly hidden self inserts on the DMs part. The characters don't feel like people.

Let me form my own opinions...
I admit I didn't get too far into the story... perhaps two hours... before giving up.
If you want me to believe one of the main characters is subtle then show him being subtle. Don't have him say something (not particularly subtle) and then write another couple of sentences about how the second character thinks that was subtle of the first character and how the first character is really good at that kind of thing.
I was enjoying certain aspects of the story but over and over the author tells us exactly what one of the two main characters thinks of the other one, in the form of both opinions and analysis of their counterpart and their words and actions. Again and again. Back and forth and not subtle at all. It feels like a proxy for the author to tell the reader what THEIR opinion should be of the character and it's maddening. Please get on with the story and let me form my own opinions.
On the upside the Narrator was quite good.
Anyway - I'll be refunding this one.
