Dracula

Auteur(s): Bram Stoker
Narrateur(s): Patricia Allison, Rachel Atkins, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jason Forbes, Theo James, Harry Myers, Himesh Patel, Jason Watkins, Richard Reed

Description

When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a house in London, he soon discovers some strange and shocking things about his new client. And then some strange things start happening back in England: an apparently unmanned ship is wrecked off the coast of Whitby, a young woman discovers strange puncture marks on her neck and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the 'Master' and his imminent arrival.

First published in 1897, Dracula is an epistolary novel, meaning that the narrative is related through letters, diary entries and newspaper articles. The story is brought to life in this Audible production by a group of actors that you might recognise from TV and film: Himesh Patel (Yesterday), Patricia Allison (Sex Education), Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People), Theo James (Divergent series) and Jason Watkins (The Crown).

Great actors, tepid tale

The voice actors are wonderful, but wow: this one drags a bit, don’t it? There’s a good story underneath a lot of unnecessary babble, though.

By far the superior production on audible

This was very fun, atmospheric, and full of action. The unusual style, via found objects, usually letters, is very uneven sometimes. Wildly contrived to incredibly effective. It’s kind of a larger conceit than that the titular character, given how widely known and accepted vampires, and vampiric stories, have become. In some ways it’s surpasses my expectations, in other ways, it disappoints. I’m torn.

The production is far better than the one with Tim Curry and Alan Cumming though, because that version has one character set to a specific point of view dictated by the chapter. So they’ll do a voice for every line of dialogue no matter who is speaking. This one has it so an actor is set to a character and it makes way more sense and it far more immersive.

Classic story!

I read this a long time ago, really fun book. There were times it dragged a bit, but glad I listened!
