À propos de cet audio
Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients (both adults and children), Drs. Hallowell and Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes - from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming - and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment.

Histoire
In 1994, Driven to Distraction sparked a revolution in our understanding of attention deficit disorder. Now a second revolution is under way in the approach to ADD, and the news is great. Drug therapies, our understanding of the role of diet and exercise, even the way we define the disorder, all are changing radically. And doctors are realizing that millions of adults suffer from this condition, though the vast majority of them remain undiagnosed and untreated.

Now, most people have heard of ADHD and know someone who may have it. But lost in the discussion of both childhood and adult diagnosis of ADHD is the potential upside: Many hugely successful entrepreneurs and highly creative people attribute their achievements to ADHD. Also unknown to most are the recent research developments, including innovations that give a clearer understanding of the ADHD brain in action.

At 57 years of age, John Brink, a successful entrepreneur, found himself in a local bookstore. As he casually wandered through the aisles, his eye was drawn to a particular title: Driven to Distraction, by Edward M. Hallowell and John Ratey. Reading the opening paragraph, John felt an uncommon connection to the material. The authors weren’t just talking to him; they were talking about him. In that moment, John was hit by a thunderclap revelation that upended his entire world. For the first time in his life, he realized who he really was.

Every year, millions of withdrawn little girls and chronically overwhelmed women go undiagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder because they don't fit the stereotypical profile: they're not fast-talking, hyperactive, or inattentive, and they are not male. Sari Solden's groundbreaking study reveals that ADHD affects just as many women as men, and that the resulting depression, disorganization, anxiety, and underachievement are also symptoms of ADHD. Newly revised and updated to reflect the latest clinical research, the book explores treatment and counseling options and more.

A revelation!
As a 40 year old who has just being diagnosed with ADHD after years of struggling with... Something... This book was amazing for me. It was recommended by my therapist, and in listening to the case studies, I found so many instances where I had experienced the exact same thing.
The book itself becomes slightly repetitive toward the end, and I do feel like we're at a major disservice by not being able to see some of the charts that are included in the printed version, but overall it was a great book, and really helped me to align my diagnosis with other adults experiencing ADHD.

Foundational Education: Expert Information, Pleasant Delivery
I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. Dr. Hallowell does a wonderful job explaining ADHD. I was diagnosed with ADHD 6 years ago, and have been educated about it off and on since then. I learned new things from his book, even though it is dated. I would consider this book one of the (if not thee) most foundational books on ADHD. I feel Dr. Hallowell speaks about ADHD matter-of-factly, and the fact that he also has ADHD makes you relate to him on a certain level. The narrator has a pleasant, theatrical voice that is enjoying to listen to. He puts outstanding emphasis in all the right places and the highs and lows of his voice will not put you to sleep. Very, very good book.
