I loved this series. The narrator used his voice to portray the different characters beautifully.

This book lies midway between R.A. Salvatore's child-friendly fantasy-adventure stories and his surprisingly mature 'Legend of Drizzt' tales written for Wizards Of The Coast. The themes are worthy of contemplation (e.g. the advantages/disadvantages of technology - the *Fourth* Magic) and Salvatore includes some undeniably violent scenes, but he also peppers the book with immature - almost silly - characters. I quite enjoyed the insertion of M16-armed modern submarine sailors into a magic-infused reality populated by elves & flying horses.

As to presentation: Lloyd James is often guilty of sounding like a reader with a text sitting open on his lap in the recording booth.. but also demonstrates commendable professional diction/timbre/cadence/voice-acting. His narration is quite enjoyable overall.
Unfortunately, lazy producers at Tantor Audio Inc. fail to even edit out "Insert the next CD to continue the audiobook" notifications from the recording.. rendering the entire production distinctly amateurish.

Altogether, 'Echoes Of The Fourth Magic' is a captivating Fantasy tale incorporating elements of post-apocalyptic conjecture, time travel, and classic Human versus Goblin Sword & Sorcery storytelling. The audiobook merits 5.5 stars out of 10. It was a nice find on the 'Plus' menu.. but - even if they remastered it - not worth your Credit.

[Note: the frustrated attraction/love plotline between one of the "Ancient Ones" and an emerald witch is handled quite nicely]
