À propos de cet audio

Mussar is an illuminating, approachable, and highly practical set of teachings for cultivating personal growth and spiritual realization in the midst of day-to-day life. Here is an accessible and inspiring introduction to this Jewish spiritual path, which until lately has been best known in the world of Orthodox Judaism. The core teaching of Mussar is that our deepest essence is inherently pure and holy, but this inner radiance is obscured by extremes of emotion, desire, and bad habits. Our work in life is to uncover the brilliant light of the soul. The Mussar masters developed transformative teachings and practices - some of which are contemplative, some of which focus on how we relate to others in daily life - to help us to heal and refine ourselves.

Excellent

There are only a couple of caveats that I would add to my review to this otherwise excellent and practical book.

the first is that I think the instructions for how to use the trades, or at least a summary of how they will be practiced, you should come earlier. so, I'm providing that here in this review.

A bulk of this book is concerned with laying out and explaining character traits or soul traits as the author calls them, that we can work on to improve our lives. I encourage anyone reading this and hoping to use the book for self-improvement to make a list of the traits that they most want to improve. at the end of the list, the author suggests that we choose 13.

The next part I will add is that He suggests we work on one trait per week, and that in this way we will hit every single one of those 13 four times in a year. and of course, since human character is deeply interwoven, by working on one we will unconsciously and accidentally improve some of the others.

There are a lot more avenues for self-improvement that are laid out in the book after the trade descriptions, and so I will leave it to the book to elaborate on them. but I think it is helpful to be aware that you will want a list of 13 or maybe fewer traits to focus on, and maybe you can even start as you go through if you find a trait you like.

I did this with the trade of order, where I decided to take five or 10 minutes out of my day everyday tidy up my room since I was so inspired by the chapter. Clutter outside of your mind will lead to clutter inside of your mind.

The book is filled with all sorts of quotes attributions, which I think is important in self-help books. so often they do little more than vaguely reference some psychological idea and then not really work to show how that applies to what they're talking about in their book. On the other hand, this book is deeply rooted in its Jewish sources.

I would suggest this book for anybody who is starting down the spiritual path of Mussar, or self-improvement, as well as anyone who has looked into massar before, maybe even from one of the classic texts, but hasn't felt the compulsion to actually apply what they've learned. this book gives a short and practical actionable path forward in the third part.
