Alberich had spent most of his youth in the Karsite military schools training to be an officer. As the son of an impoverished mother, he had no other career choice open to him. And Alberich had risen in the ranks with almost unnatural speed. He developed expertise with many weapons and excelled in academic subjects with an ease that was the envy of his classmates. But in fact, the reclusive Alberich studied long and hard, pushing himself ruthlessly.
In battle, Alberich had always had a sort of "sixth sense" about things that were about to happen - when and from where the enemy would attack. Instinctively, he has this ability, for the Sunpriests kept careful watch for anyone exhibiting "demon powers" that were the hallmark of Karse's greatest enemy - the witch nation of Valdemar. Those they caught were "cleansed" in the fires of Vkandis Sunlord.
Both Alberich's skill and secret served him well in the army of Karse, and when Alberich became one of Karse's youngest captains, he received a special gift - a powerful white stallion "liberated" from the enemy. But this honor was merely a distraction, for the Sunpriests had laid a trap that even Alberich's strange foresight could not predict....

Excellent story
The story is amazing, I really enjoy it.
It’s a great addition to the Valdemar series. I’m not sure how someone new to this series would view it (since I’ve read every single story), but I think they’d be fine. Alberich is one of my favourite characters.
The Narrator has some very odd and distracting pronunciation errors... “collegium” was the most jarring. But his voice and storytelling is excellent, so I can put up with the pronunciation errors.

Warriors of Faith; take Heart!
Alberich is one of the only religious character who I not only can not only understand, but root for. I don't believe in God, but I can feel inspired by someone who adheres to faith as a value. Alberich is a character I love because his faith is against the weapon of the state (Karsi's mad preists), but he is a follower of the God that sees the ideal and strives for it.

A Favorite
I was glad to see that this book finally made it into audio book format.
This book remains one of my favorite books in the Valdemar series, and Alberich is one of my favorite characters. This a great stand-alone story that still fits nicely into the greater narrative of the series.
I recommend it without reservation.

Excellent story, well told
Love the story of enigmatic Alberich, Actually, I love Valdemar and its characters! But everyone knows the weaponsmaster is mean and has no sense o humor ;)
The narrator was convincing in both male and female voices, distinctive for each character. Thoroughly enjoyed the listen after years of re-reading. Off to the next book!
