character likability

The story is interesting however I am struggling with liking the main character. Character seems neurotic and paranoid which seems to have gotten worse in the second book. I enjoy the daughters character she seems realistic as a teen struggling to find her place in the world whereas her mother seems to struggle to stay the same.
