“Provocative and thrilling ... Loeb asks us to think big and to expect the unexpected.”—Alan Lightman, New York Times bestselling author of Einstein’s Dreams and Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine
Harvard’s top astronomer lays out his controversial theory that our solar system was recently visited by advanced alien technology from a distant star.
In late 2017, scientists at a Hawaiian observatory glimpsed an object soaring through our inner solar system, moving so quickly that it could only have come from another star. Avi Loeb, Harvard’s top astronomer, showed it was not an asteroid; it was moving too fast along a strange orbit, and left no trail of gas or debris in its wake. There was only one conceivable explanation: the object was a piece of advanced technology created by a distant alien civilization.
In Extraterrestrial, Loeb takes listeners inside the thrilling story of the first interstellar visitor to be spotted in our solar system. He outlines his controversial theory and its profound implications: for science, for religion, and for the future of our species and our planet. A mind-bending journey through the furthest reaches of science, space-time, and the human imagination, Extraterrestrial challenges listeners to aim for the stars—and to think critically about what’s out there, no matter how strange it seems.

Narrator Nailed It
Robert Petkoff. An inspiration to this aspiring voice actor.
As for the actual book, it seemed to spool off near the end. It didn't help that I heard the author interviewed on CBC Radio a few months ago..he was a tad confrontational and had quite an attitude. He steamrolled Matt Galloway and slagged Neil Degrass Tyson. A little sensitive & unprofessional.

The Man Makes His Case
Loeb doesn't ask us to believe in Aliens. He instead asks that we follow the evidence over and around our own biases, and be willing to consider all possibilities when broaching the mysteries of the universe, not merely those which we are intellectually prepared to entertain. This is a compelling and important book, regardless of how his theory ultimately strikes you.

Exciting unorthodox opinion!
Will we ever know for sure what exactly this interstellar object was? No of course not. Humanity has a very strong and unfortunate tendency to move towards bland opinions that embrace the status quo. This was a very refreshing book!

An exciting theory on Oumuamua's alien-origins
Avi shares his theories on the extraterrestrial shape, origin, size, and purpose of the unexplainable Ouamuamua object. Was it a comet with never before seen qualities or an extraterrestrial vessel? His exotic hypothesis will leave your mind racing in all the right ways. He also highlights the scientific community's bias against extraterrestrial theories; similarly, Avi appears to have a bias which supports his extraterrestrial theory over other theories.

Scientist explains the real extraterrestrial
I started a subscription to Audible so I could hear this book. Sometimes in history a scientist has stood up and stated the facts at great risk to themselves. Avi Loeb saw the astrological evidence that this amazing object came into our solar system from outer space. It's trajectory was changed by our sun and it fly-by close to Earth. Then everyone was stunned when suddenly, and with no explanation, it increased it's speed. There is only one explanation... and Avi Loeb will tell you.

Little to do with extra terrestrial life, more to do with critique of scientific community
Great read (listen) that has a small but important amount about ET life and a great and insightful amount about the culture of the scientific community. Highly relevant for academics interested in cultivating diverse thought and approaches to problem solving or addressing hypothesis.

Unfortunately, quite disappointing
The book was 25% self aggrandization; 25% colleague flattery; 25% political diatribe and 25% science. The book had potential, but failed by emphasizing too many peripheral issues. I was hoping for an academic view of the subject as opposed to the science fiction and sensationalism we are so often fed. Sadly, barely 25% of this book discussed the scientific issues and almost all of that was concerning Oumuamua, which though interesting is only one element of a complex subject. The author may have all the necessary qualifications, but the results were sadly disappointing.

What a dummy
Let me sum this up for you: "this rock has to be aliens because we don't have any other explanation."
A few months after the book was published, scientists found another explanation. What a joke.
