À propos de cet audio

From one of the most admired international leaders comes a timely, considered, and personal look at the history and current resurgence of fascism today and the virulent threat it poses to international freedom, prosperity, and peace.

At the end of the 1980s, when the Cold War ended, many, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, believed that democracy had triumphed politically once and for all. Yet nearly 30 years later, the direction of history no longer seems certain. A repressive and destructive force has begun to reemerge on the global stage - sweeping across Europe, parts of Asia, and the United States - that to Albright, looks very much like fascism.

Based on her personal experience growing up in Hungary under Hitler and the Communist regime that followed World War II, as well as knowledge gleaned from her distinguished diplomatic career and insights from colleagues around the globe, Albright paints a clear picture of how fascism flourishes and explains why it is once again taking hold worldwide, identifying the factors contributing to its rise. Most importantly, she makes clear what could happen if we fail to act against rising fascist forces today and in the near future, including the potential for economic catastrophe, a lasting spike in terrorist activity, increased sectarian violence, a rash of large-scale humanitarian emergencies, massive human rights violations, a breakdown in multilateral cooperation, and nearly irreparable self-inflicted damage to America's reputation and capacity to lead.

Albright also offers clear solutions, including adjusting to the ubiquity of social media and the changing nature of the workplace and understanding ordinary citizens' universal desire for sources of constancy and morality in their lives. She contends that we must stimulate economic growth and narrow the gap between the rich and poor, urban and rural, women and men, and skilled and unskilled; work across borders to respond to transnational challenges; and ultimately recognize that democracy's unique virtue is its ability - through reason and open debate - to find remedies for its own shortcomings.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Known for her frank manner and direct approach, Albright brings these traits to her performance. Both qualities make her a strong narrator for this serious work.... Her experiences as a diplomat serve her well as a narrator - she is confident, steady, and engaging." (AudioFile)

Fascinating insight into the former secretary of state's life, upbringing and experience's with past and modern day fascism. Albright is careful not to make sweeping blanket statements and generalizations; while, drawing obvious parallels between past and present fascist regimes and Donald Trump. Trump is not a fascist, but the warning signs are evident. If left unchecked Trump's presidency could slip and fall fate to the dark allure of fascism. A good listen and well read by Albright, this book is worth the read/listen over other more salacious commentaries on today's political struggles. #Audible1

I first bought the book after hearing about Madeleine Albright on the news a few years ago. I though it was going to be a slog to get through but guess what? This is a great 101 book to whats happening politically all around the world. Well read, draws on many mini histories of countries, including our neighbours to the South. I enjoyed hearing parts of Madeleine's personal journey immigrating to the US and subsequently rising to the highest position in government that someone not born in the States could hold. Listening to it helped me understand why a politician would undermine the public confidence in the very institutions that support the Rule of Law: the judicial system, the free press, the government, the education system. The knowledge spurs me to research the people who run for election and helps me decide who best represents my morals, sentiments and the policies for a healthy society.

Lots of details and reliable first hand experience. Dry voice but not impossibly so. Required reading for those interested in understanding our political trajectory and the psychology behind dictatorship.

Intelligent and insightful.

It is hard to live through these times - pandemic, 4 years of a chaotic American leadership, decline of multilateralism and cooperation- and not feel despair for global outlook.
Madeleine Albright masterfully weaves the facts that allowed often seemingly mediocre and unscrupulous men to capture the narrative and influence power for centuries.
This book ought to be required reading in all our high schools and surely before the right and privilege to vote is given. History and its figures tend to recreate winning formulas and if we want to shape the future, we must understand the past’s influence on our present.
An audiobook to listen to year after year.
