Good read

It was a good book, definitely start with this as the official number one. Then move to “sufficiently advanced magic”, which is also good. Anyways I’ve appreciated the read.

Promising Storyline

Could do with a better narrator. Story is good so far, needs more excitment. it's ok

Not nearly as engaging as Arcane Ascension

I think it was a decent fantasy novel, but I thought the characters and ideas in Ascension were much more interesting.

Read the books out of order, for the best.

Let me start by saying this was a very good book and I really enjoyed it. However I'm not sure that I would have felt that way if I started here.

I always check ok but the reviews before I buy anything and I was disappointed by this ones reviews. so I skipped it and looked into others and selected "sufficiently advanced magic" instead. and I absolutely loved it. Later after 2.5 I look into this one again and notice it has some of the same charecter names and seems similar. At this point I'm already invested in these characters and want to know more.

This is the story of how Karis started out. it doesn't mention that anywhere in the description or the reviews but I was already interested in learning more about the characters so I was more interested before I even started it.

Can't wait to see how all his new friends fall into place and what happens next to form such strong bonds.

Well Read. not much to the book itself

Love the genre, but this didn't have a lot of depth or grand storytelling. The world building is weak, and the characters are poorly developed over the whole book.

I am becoming Andrew Rowe fan

after being introduced to Andrew Rowe work from Sufficiently Advanced Magic. I was impressed. Deciding to explore his Early work I am very impressed. I like the world, its politics and his way of introduce his way of how magic works. his character's are diverse intriguing and diverse.

Nick Podehl dose an amazing job as narrator bring this fantasy world to life. My complement to both narrator and author and Audible

Good Enough

I listened to this after the Arcane Ascension series (up to book 3) to learn about the lore. This story is OK, and I'll try the next book because this one is good enough. The writing is ok, but so far not the same caliber as other books by Rowe. If this we're my first book of his I would not continue. However...

The author is a born story teller, finding his feat with novels at the time of writing. I love his other, more refined work, so I'd say stick with it.

The performance by Podehl is 100% Fantastic. He has become one of the few readers from whom I will start a new series solely based on him being the reader. My back catalogue is full of Podehl.

Fun and Action Packed

A fun, exciting, fresh story with easy-to-relate-to characters, plenty of action, and a unique world. The opening chapters quickly hooked me and I will be continuing this series to completion!

The story begins with a sorcerer named Lydia rescues a young man with a unique power over metal from a prisoner. From there, they make new friends, forge alliances, and find themselves woven in conspiracies with gods and men.

The main character, Taelien, is primarily upbeat and enthusiastic about helping others. He was a little naive at times and was very much a "hero," though I did find him charming enough to care about what happened to him. Lydia, my favourite of the trio, was intelligent, resourceful, cunning, and willing to learn to do the right thing. Her passion for knowledge made her easy to like, and I can't want to see where she goes from here. Her banter with Jonan, the third main character and consummate rival, was a ton of fun. I look forward to seeing where their frenemy relationship goes from here.

The world building is complex and uses many different terms, especially when referring to magic. There is a plethora of telling over showing in this story, though in hindsight it isn't such a bad idea, given how intricate the details are. It also helps in many of the inventive action scenes to show exactly what is happening and when.

All of the prose is clean and easy to follow. There is a wit and charm that made this thoroughly enjoyable and an easy read for anyone looking to binge a fantasy book over a weekend. I'm glad I gave it a chance and can't wait to see what happens next.

Complex Fantasy Novel

Interesting characters and complex spells which contribute to an more full meat novel. I like the dialogue between the characters. Their youth shows but provides a comic relief making for not so serious tale. Well done and look forward to the next novel. Nick Podehl does great narration for female and male characters.
