The characters were surprisingly well-developed and likable (minus the villains, of course, even the twist one who, honestly, was suspicious as heck right from the start). The supernatural aspect was handled really well, with a kind of self-awareness. It wasn't too over the top. Likewise, the way the author handled the subject of schizophrenia was refreshing, straightforward but sensitive.
The mystery wasn't the most complex, but it was still compelling.
Even though the plot hinged on a twist, it still held up to a repeat read, which is saying something.
