The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.
Of course, some things are better left dead.

Hot grimdark fantasy!
Heads up going in for anyone who isn't familiar with Grimdark style Science Fantasy - there's liberal use of trope and a terribly unrealistic scale to everything in these sorts of works. It's part of the charm, but it's not for everyone. Its very broody, the characters are all a little excessive in one facet or another, the protagonists hero's journey can feel jarring at times.
But it's really fun! Let the horror of this world sink in as you uncover it; enjoy the coming of age ride as this hot, queer, spiteful protagonist navigates a peer group for the first time; remind yourself that these characters would be akin to the draft year athletes that will go on to become household names someday when they show off their prowess and talents.
Grimdark can be hot and fun too - if you want it to be.

Loved it!
Gideon the Ninth was the most fun I’ve had with an audiobook to date. I enjoyed the writing so much I’m buying the paperback ASAP so I can read through it and savour the language. Muir’s writing is simply dripping with personality and the irreverent humour of Gideon had me laughing many times while listening. Fantastic.

So good!!!
I absolutely loved this book!! the characters, the dialogue, the plot, the world, everything was fantastic and kept me wanting more! The narrator also did an excellent job and I loved that all the characters had their own voices that both suited them and that I could tell apart. I definitely reccomend!

Great Read
What I appreciate about this book is that the story is the focus. It’s not some cushy teen romance story where girl meets girl and nothing else matters. The story is the focus and stays the focus. And the story is great! Twists and turns, lots of mystery and puzzles. Loved it!

Excellent story and narration
Excellent story and narration, I'd seen this book show up a few times on audible but didn't think much of it given lack of interest in the theme; I'm glad I gave it a listen though. The narration is on point and the book's primary characters are well written. The story, characters, and worldbuilding are surprisingly intriguing, and while the direction of the plot can be a bit predictable there are enough twists and turns to keep things fresh and exciting.

The most enthralled I’ve been in years
This is, without a doubt, the most captivated I have been by a fantasy narrative since I read Lord of the Rings as a young teenager. It hits all the right notes, and is executed perfectly. I am obsessed with Gideon, Harrow, and the whole lot of characters.

goths, gays, and space. whats not to love?
Fantastic narration of a fantastic story! I haven't had a book grab me like this in years, and now I'm enthralled in this series. I couldnt stop listening. I'm very picky about narrators - this one is perfect. despite an enormous cast of characters, she manages to make each one unique and recognizable from one another. She delivers Gideon's sass with perfection.

Strength:
I really like the dynamic among female characters. There are less male-gazed description on female characters' appearance.
Downsides:
If there were many more female than male characters, it would be much outstanding.
This book would be perfect if the teacher, god, and emperor were all females. I don't understand why the god and emperor are still male in female writer's work.
