À propos de cet audio
Georgia Peach Book Award
For fans of Girl, Interrupted, Thirteen Reasons Why, and All the Bright Places comes a novel Nicola Yoon, author of Everything, Everything, calls "a haunting, beautiful, and necessary book that will stay with you long after you've read the last page".
Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At 17 she's already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she's learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don't have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you.
Every new scar hardens Charlie's heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.
A deeply moving portrait of a girl in a world that owes her nothing, and has taken so much, and the journey she undergoes to put herself back together. Kathleen Glasgow's debut is heartbreakingly real and unflinchingly honest. It's a story you won't be able to look away from.
Includes an author's note read by the author.
"Equal parts keen-eyed empathy, stark candor, and terrible beauty. This book is why we read stories: to experience what it's like to survive the unsurvivable; to find light in the darkest night." (Jeff Zentner, author of The Serpent King)
"Raw, visceral, and starkly beautiful, with writing that is at times transcendent in its brilliance.... An unforgettable story of trauma and resilience." (Kerry Kletter, author of The First Time She Drowned)
"A breathtakingly written book about pain and hard-won healing.... I want every girl to read Girl in Pieces." (Kara Thomas, author of The Darkest Corners)
“A Girl, Interrupted for a new generation.... The story of the mad girl is ultimately a story about being a girl in a mad world, how it breaks us into pieces and how we glue ourselves back together." (Melissa Febos, author of Whip Smart and Abandon Me)
“Dark, frank, and tender, Girl in Pieces keeps the reader electrified for its entire journey. You’re so uncertain if Charlie will heal, so fully immersed in hoping she does.” (Michelle Wildgen, author of Bread and Butter and You’re Not You)
"Girl in Pieces has the breath of life; every character in it is fully alive. Charlie Davis' complexities are drawn with great understanding and subtlety." (Charles Baxter, author of National Book Award finalist The Feast of Love)

For all of Emory's life she's been told who she is. In town she's the rich one—the great-great-granddaughter of the mill's founder. At school she's hot Maddie Ward's younger sister. And at home, she's the good one, her stoner older brother Joey's babysitter. Everything was turned on its head, though, when she and Joey were in the car accident that killed Candy MontClaire. Biz knows how to float. She has her people, her posse, her mom, and the twins. She has Grace. And she has her dad, who tells her about the little kid she was, and who shouldn't be here but is. So Biz doesn't tell anyone anything. Not about her dark, runaway thoughts, not about kissing Grace or noticing Jasper, the new boy. And she doesn't tell anyone about her dad. Because her dad died when she was seven. And Biz knows how to float, right there on the surface - normal, okay, regular, fine.

Everyone in fifteen-year-old Bella’s life needs something from her. Her mom needs her to help around the house, her dad needs her to not make waves, her ex needs her to not be so much. The only person who never needed anything from her was her grandmother—and now she’s dead. There’s only one thing that dulls the pressure: alcohol. Histoire
When a car crash sidelines Mickey just before softball season, she has to find a way to hold on to her spot as the catcher for a team expected to make a historic tournament run. Behind the plate is the only place she’s ever felt comfortable, and the painkillers she’s been prescribed can help her get there. The pills do more than take away pain; they make her feel good. But as the pressure to be Mickey Catalan heightens, her need increases, and it becomes less about pain and more about want, something that could send her spiraling out of control.

Histoire
Precociously intelligent, imaginative, energetic, and ambitious, Marya Hornbacher grew up in a comfortable middle-class American home. At the age of 5, she returned home from ballet class one day, put on an enormous sweater, curled up on her bed, and cried because she thought she was fat. By age 9, she was secretly bulimic, throwing up at home after school, while watching Brady Bunch reruns on television and munching Fritos. She added anorexia to her repertoire a few years later and took great pride in her ability to starve. Marya's story gathers intensity with each passing year. By the time she is in college and working for a wire news service in Washington D.C., she is in the grip of a bout of anorexia so horrifying that it will forever put to rest the romance of wasting away. Down to 52 pounds and counting, Marya becomes a battlefield: her powerful death instinct at war with the will to live. Why would a talented young girl go through the looking glass and slip into a netherworld where up is down, food is greed, and death is honor? Why enter into a love affair with hunger, drugs, sex, and death? Marya Hornbacher sustained both anorexia and bulimia through 5 lengthy hospitalizations, endless therapy, the loss of family, friends, jobs, and ultimately, any sense of what it means to be "normal." In this vivid, emotionally wrenching memoir, she recreates the experience and illuminates the tangle of personal, family, and cultural causes underlying eating disorders.

In 1995, Hadley Freeman wrote in her diary: “I just spent three years of my life in mental hospitals. So why am I crazier than I was before????” From the ages of 14 to 17, Freeman lived in psychiatric wards after developing anorexia nervosa. Her doctors informed her that her body was cannibalizing her muscles and heart for nutrition, but they could tell her little else: why she had it, what it felt like, what recovery looked like. For the next twenty years, Freeman lived as a “functioning anorexic,” grappling with new forms of self-destructive behavior as the anorexia mutated and persisted.

Ce que les critiques en disent
"Narrator Julia Whelan's initial portrayal of Charlie reveals her unwillingness to speak - as well as her pain, fear, and fury.... Gradually, Whelan recounts the changes Charlie experiences in a treatment center as she reaches out and hopes for healing. On release, Whelan contrasts the safety Charlie has come to know with her mother's coldness and desertion, but Charlie's grit is impressive as she makes faltering steps to support herself financially, artistically, and emotionally. Whelan's portrayals of minor characters aid the realism of the optimistic ending." (AudioFile)
"Charlie Davis has been damaged and abused after several years of living on the streets, but she is fiercely resilient. Though it will appeal to readers of Ellen Foster, Speak, and Girl, Interrupted, Girl in Pieces is an entirely original work, compulsively readable and deeply human." (Julie Schumacher, author the New York Times best-seller Dear Committee Members)

Mixed feelings
I heard many good things about this book and was prepared for it to be hard to listen to. The book itself contains many related factors for those dealing with addiction and self harm. This book however is not exciting; the plot is just a plateau and you are told the story of the everyday life of a teenage girl.
I loved how raw this book was and how it was not plot driven yet so realistic.
Personally, something was missing to make this an amazing story about relapse and recovery.
I have been contemplating returning it and the only reason I am not is because many stories like this do not exist. Many people have stories with similar struggles and I feel like I have to keep Charlie’s to honour that.

Wow. Absolutely exquisite.
I don't even know where to begin. In the first half hour I was wary of whether or not I would be able to finish it, given the graphic nature but I am so grateful that I did. For the first time in years, I was introduced to a character and a life that resonated with me in ways that no single person I've ever met had. Charlie Davis' character, so complex and dimensional, beautifully symphonies the light and the darkness of hardship. As each chapter passed, I found myself holding my breath in anticipation for the words to come. Now that it's over, I find myself wishing I knew more of Charlie's life - and Riley for that matter. Totally captivating and sensational in every way I hope a great story to be.

Honest review
I freaking love Julia Whelan, she did an immaculate job here.
Where to start? I’ve read this 6 times in the span of a year and each time I still loved it as much as the first time.
I’ll say off the bat this book doesn’t have any big plot twist or secrets, which honestly doesn’t matter to me. Charlie Davis is such a young girl who’s been through so much hell but she stays strong.
This is such a diferent book from anything else I’ve read but I love it so much.
Kathleen Glasgow did such a beautiful job with such a broken and messed up situation. I love stories that don’t sugar coat and that don’t make things out to be something they aren’t. It’s a fictional story that feels so real and is unfortunately a reality for a lot of people, but the portrayal of Charlie, and Riley, and Blue, and Linus was so unbelievably raw and real.
1000% recommend, that being said there are very heavy topics and themes, so if that could affect you in any way I recommend looking into it to be sure it’s a good read for you :)

Interesting book but hard listen wouldn’t read again personally.
The story line is relatable but redundant and causes the listener looses interest due to repeat story line

Regret.
This book was really really bad. I know that it’s YA, and all YA tends to be cringey and uncomfortable, but there were parts of it where I just honestly felt embarrassed to be listening to this. I’m not shy with my books, they’re usually always playing on Alexa, but as soon as my husband would get home I’d shut this one off!
I realize the subject is a sensitive one, but I don’t believe the author did people who self harm any favours. It all read very stereotypically.
Also, side note, the narrators male voice is absolutely the worst thing I’ve ever heard. I legit have never felt so uncomfortable listening to a book before.
