Description

In the gentle coastal town of South Cove, California, all Jill Gardner wants is to keep her store - Coffee, Books, and More - open and running. So why is she caught up in the business of murder?

When Jill's elderly friend Miss Emily calls in a fit of pique, she already knows that the city council is trying to force Emily to sell her dilapidated old house. But Emily's gumption goes for naught when she dies unexpectedly and leaves the house to Jill, along with all of her problems...and her enemies. Convinced that her friend was murdered, Jill is finding the list of suspects longer than the list of repairs needed on the house. But Jill is determined to uncover the culprit - especially if it gets her closer to South Cove's finest, Detective Greg King. The problem is, the killer knows that she's on the case - and is determined to close the book on Jill permanently.

Great series

This is book one in the series where we meet some of the main characters (and lose some) and also where Susan Boyce begins finding her way through the narrative. I love this series for the most part, each new story has a different type of crisis for Jill to overcome and a mystery to solve, much to the chagrin of her new friend Greg, a detective of the South Cove police. After restarting the series, I found that this first book kind of made me want to give Jill a smack for being so whiny after her big windfall, but then again, a close friend is murdered, her best friend has gone missing, she has 30 days to do some major renovations or the Mayor will condemn her new home, the brother of the man she is falling in love with tells Jill that his brother is married, and someone is trying to kill her, so I guess she has the right to be a bit of a whiner.

The further books are a joy for me as the characters are developed and the narrator finds her way. I wish I could move to South Cove and have a read at Coffee, Books and More while sipping on a latte prepared by the Barista Babe.

dull

Not a very good story line. It was hard to hold my interest, but I listened to it all because it was a freebie. Save your credits. Narratation was boring. She wasn't fluid in her speech, which was quite annoying.

Very bad romance pretending to be a whodunnit

There should be a special category of books that are actually pulpy romance but pretends to be cozy mystery. This is so badly written that I kept cringing every 15 mins. The holier than thou protagonist is unbearable. Her idea of being overwhelmed is getting more and more money. Also, the author has such condescending attitude towards blue collar workers. It’s pretty appalling.
