Serviceable Mystery-Thriller
T.J. Brearton offers a well-conceived story following a one-time Neurobiology PhD Candidate now working his first Homicide case as a Detective. The plot is twisty-turny and full of clever knowledge-based realizations leading 'Brendan Healy' towards the solution to the case. Speaking as a physician with 11 years of Post-Secondary training, the insights were satisfactorally plausible. In addition, the writing is capable and the author's description skills are creditable.
Less fortunately, Brearton involves Healy in the case far too much (how it affects his political standing in the Police Force, for example), relies on sordid sex elements to titillate readers/listeners, and includes several gun battles for some reason.
As to presentation: Tantor Audio Inc. offers a meritorious - if unspectacular - listening experience. Reader John Glouchevich provides commendable diction, cadence, and tone.. but an annoying whispery timbre, uninspired voice-acting, and a glacial reading pace (set playback speed at 1.25X for this one). They definitely could have cast this project better.
Altogether, 'Habit' rates 5.5 stars out of 10. As a 'Plus' selection, it was a reasonable distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons.. but save your Credit for something else should Audible ask for one.
