À propos de cet audio

What happens when technology fails and nature bares its teeth?

Lieutenant Callum Harper knows that his team are as tough as they come: nine highly trained men and women and one battle robot who’s 11 feet of pure, cybernetic muscle. But as they drop through the atmosphere of the uncharted planet Capsun 23, Cal can’t shake the feeling that something is off about this mission. Three data drones have previously touched down, but soon after went dark. And now, all communication with a group of civilian researchers has been lost. Intel suspects scavengers are to blame - or at worst, pirates.

But Cal’s instincts are telling him otherwise. All that’s known about Capsun 23 is that the gravity is within acceptable limits, the air is breathable, and water is abundant. Three things to encourage life...but what kind of life? Cal has never been one to back away from a potential fight, but if his instincts are right, a lone team simply won’t cut it. Not by a long shot.

just can't

narrator is too raspy in voice, just to hard to overcome, potential is there, would have stuck with it with better narration

good story. seemingly new writer.

nice listen (audiobook) energetic speaker. alot of what seems like exposition and description from the main character, drags at moments. nice time killer and writer obviously very skilled and perfecting their craft.

Straightforward 'Space Marine' Adventure

Clearly, J.G.Cressey doesn't have any Hugo or Nebula awards in his future. This book is unapologetically aimed at readers/listeners who attend ComicCon and play a lot of 'HALO' (don't expect to be blown away).. but if your expectations are realistic, that's just fine. The vocabulary & prose are acceptable, the plot - while admittedly thin (explore a planetoid research station that suddenly went quiet) - is at least action-heavy, and the description is sufficient to make the combat scenes mind's-eye vivid. The book is underwhelming but fun.

Reader Alex Wyndham reads with an occasionally distracting Aussie/Kiwi accent, but a professional cadence & timbre. His diction and pacing are furthermore praiseworthy, but his tone is a little bit melodramatic and his whispery voice-acting (particularly for the obligatory strikingly-beautiful-but-dangerously-badass female Sergeants 'Becka' & 'Sinclair') is oddly off-putting at times. Altogether, the performance is best described as "adequate".

I give this moderately formulaic "Cool-Factor"-fuelled book (it has an 11-foot-tall mech-armored Combat Robot named 'Max', after all) 6 stars out of 10.
As a 'Plus' option, 'Harper's Ten' is a reasonable download and investment of time - it's sufficiently entertaining to make a long drive or a boring night shift tolerable - but your Credit would be better spent elsewhere.

[Note: I suspect that if you are an existing fan of the 'Fractured Space' series, you are accustomed to the glaringly typecast characters Cressey employs - and enjoy them. This one should be satisfying if that's the case]

Very enjoyable sci-fi

Very Hollywood blockbuster in its approach, which makes the story at times easy to predict, but easy to visualize. Audio performance is really good and lends itself a lot to the characters, though my only complaint is that the Italian character doesn't sound Italian at all.

Entertaining

Excellent narration, slow start, good ending. Movie fodder. It's tough to write 15 words about this one.

Meh.

The characters seem so uninteresting I kept wanting the creatures to win. Unfortunately since this book is a sequel I guess the creatures didn’t win.

Narration to the rescue

The narrator did a fantastic job giving voice to the characters. You even grew to like a couple of them. But this was a book made to be a movie and things you can do in movies don't always translate well into books. This is a prime example. In a movie where the visual pacing is quick this would be great. In a book all the extra description of thoughts and scenery killed the urgency and just made it boring. The MC is also pretentious or an idiot depending on the scene. The plot holes...
