In this major statement, the renowned international-relations scholar John Mearsheimer argues that liberal hegemony, the foreign policy pursued by the United States since the Cold War ended, is doomed to fail. It makes far more sense, he maintains, for Washington to adopt a more restrained foreign policy based on a sound understanding of how nationalism and realism constrain great powers abroad.

A decade after the cold war ended, policy makers and academics foresaw a new era of peace and prosperity, an era in which democracy and open trade would herald the "end of history." The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, sadly shattered these idyllic illusions, and John Mearsheimer's masterful new book explains why these harmonious visions remain utopian.

You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

The relationship between the US and China, the world’s two superpowers, is peculiarly volatile. Their militaries play a dangerous game of chicken, corporations steal intellectual property, intelligence satellites peer, and AI technicians plot. The capacity for either country to cross a fatal line grows daily. Kevin Rudd, a former Australian prime minister who has studied, lived in, and worked with China for more than forty years, is one of the very few people who can offer real insight into the mindsets of the leadership whose judgment will determine if a war will be fought.

In 1965, the US government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians. This was one of the most important turning points of the 20th century, eliminating the largest communist party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring copycat terror programs in faraway countries like Brazil and Chile. But these events remain widely overlooked, precisely because the CIA's secret interventions were so successful.

Description
The defining geopolitical contest of the 21st century is between China and the US. But is it avoidable? And if it happens, is the outcome already inevitable?
China and America are world powers without serious rivals. They eye each other warily across the Pacific; they communicate poorly; there seems little natural empathy. A massive geopolitical contest has begun.
America prizes freedom; China values freedom from chaos. America values strategic decisiveness; China values patience.America is becoming society of lasting inequality; China a meritocracy. America has abandoned multilateralism; China welcomes it.
Kishore Mahbubani, a diplomat and scholar with unrivalled access to policymakers in Beijing and Washington, has written the definitive guide to the deep fault lines in the relationship, a clear-eyed assessment of the risk of any confrontation, and a bracingly honest appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses, and superpower eccentricities, of the US and China.

The facts from past and current is very convincing. The language in the context throughout the book is rich and elegant.
I like the deep knowledge the author possessed on China, United States, South East Asia and rest of the world. I like the author speaks from his heart and soul to advise the rulers of dominate countries in the world to do any thing to avoid war and to bring peace and prosperity to their people.

Excellent book
Seldom does an author come along with the clarity of thought and eloquence of delivery that Mr. Mahbubani does. America needs to hear more from those like him rather than the current gang of pseudo-intellectuals from prominent publications like the NY Times and The Atlantic.

Very informative book
Really enjoyed Kishore’s view of the current geopolitical landscape. He is neither American nor Chinese so I find his view very balanced and impartial.

Overall, well written
This was a good read. It is a Fair critique of American foreign and domestic policies and the mistakes that have been made which has given rise to China's power. I do not fear a world in which China is wealthy and power. I only fear a world in which China's rise is seen a threat to America, and that America feels that it must use force to protect itself. This book demonstrates this as a future possibility and it will result in the destruction of mankind.

A good review of China and the US
a good book, a little biased based on the background of the author. Found it in my humble opinion about 60% anecdotal and some qualitative, with 40% quantitative support. A good informative view on a different perspective of current affairs.

Shallow, Asian Perspective
Not for a knowledgeable audience, but an American contrarian. Useful to understand a possibility of a faultless China.
