À propos de cet audio
Prosecuting attorney in the Manson trial Vincent Bugliosi held a unique insider's position in one of the most baffling and horrifying cases of the 20th century: the cold-blooded Tate-LaBianca murders carried out by Charles Manson and four of his followers. What motivated Manson in his seemingly mindless selection of victims, and what was his hold over the young women who obeyed his orders? Now available for the first time in unabridged audio, the gripping story of this famous and haunting crime is brought to life by acclaimed narrator Scott Brick.

Histoire
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents.

The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

Genovese, Gambino, Bonnano, Colombo, and Lucchese. For decades these Five Families ruled New York and built the American Mafia (or Cosa Nostra) into an underworld empire. Today, the Mafia is an endangered species, battered and beleaguered by aggressive investigators, incompetent leadership, betrayals, and generational changes that produced violent, unreliable leaders and recruits.

In 2014, Shane Bauer was hired for nine dollars an hour to work as an entry-level prison guard at a private prison in Winnfield, Louisiana. An award-winning investigative journalist, he used his real name. Four months later, his employment came to an abrupt end. But he had seen enough and wrote an exposé about his experiences that won a National Magazine Award. In American Prison, Bauer weaves a much deeper reckoning with his experiences together with a thoroughly researched history of for-profit prisons in America from their origins in the decades before the Civil War.

In the late hours of July 22, 1991, Detective Patrick "Pat" Kennedy of the Milwaukee Police Department was asked to respond to a possible homicide. Little did he know that he would soon be delving into the dark mind of one of America's most notorious serial killers, the "Milwaukee Cannibal", Jeffrey Dahmer. Kennedy spent the next six weeks locked in an interrogation room with Dahmer. There, the killer described in lurid detail how he lured 17 young men to his apartment, where he strangled, sexually assaulted, dismembered, and in some cases, cannibalized his victims.

Alone with her new husband on a tiny Pacific atoll, a young woman, combing the beach, finds an odd aluminum container washed up out of the lagoon, and beside it on the sand something glitters: a gold tooth in a scorched human skull. The investigation that follows uncovers an extraordinarily complex and puzzling true-crime story. Only Vincent Bugliosi, who recounted his successful prosecution of mass murderer Charles Manson in the best seller Helter Skelter, was able to draw together the hundreds of conflicting details of the mystery and reconstruct what really happened....

Polls reveal that 85 percent of Americans believe there was a conspiracy behind Lee Harvey Oswald. Some even believe Oswald was entirely innocent. In this encyclopedic, absorbing audiobook, Vincent Bugliosi shows how the public has come to believe such lies about the day that changed the course of history. Bugliosi has devoted almost 20 years of his life to this project, and is determined to show that, despite the overwhelming popular perception, Oswald killed Kennedy and acted alone.

The DA’s perspective
I put off listening to this book, even though I read it many years ago, simply because the crime details are so gruesome. Once you get past that part the rest of the book is well written- and as it is from the District Attorney’s perspective- very thorough. I appreciated the updates. Was left wondering about the impact on the jurors though.

Absolutely mesmerizing. Well written and paced. Heavy with, but not bogged down by, minute detail.
Scott Brick's narration lends just the right gravitas that often reminded me of Orson Wells in his early radio days.

Great narrator
This book could have been hard to listen, but the performance of Scott Brick really brings to life the words of the author. When you are not very familiar with the Tate murder, it is a real crash course and you can definitely learn from it and understand the justice system in California during the trial.

An Ugly, but Pivotal Piece of American History
Helter Skelter is the best-selling crime novel of all time. It even outsold 'In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. This is an intensely detailed account of the research, building and prosecution of the Manson Family murder cases by attorney, Vincent Bugliosi and portrays how the crimes unfolded from his vantage point.
The savagery of the Manson murders generated intense paranoia in the population. It probably signaled the end of the counter-culture which turned on itself by wearing platform shoes and dancing to bad music in discothecques in the years that followed. This likely pleased the powers that be in the 1960s who considered the counter culture to be a force that it desperately wanted to defeat but could not figure out how.
The narration is perfect. Scott Brick sounds like an attorney relating his case.
An afterward follows the story in which Bugliosi follows up with the key players 25 years later and relates how their lives turned out and their perspective changed or not changed.
