À propos de cet audio
First loves, first songs, and the drugs and reckless high school exploits that fueled them - meet music icons Tegan and Sara as you’ve never known them before in this intimate and raw account of their formative years.
High School is the revelatory and unique coming-of-age story of Sara and Tegan Quin, identical twins from Calgary, Alberta, growing up in the height of grunge and rave culture in the 90s, well before they became the celebrated musicians and global LGBTQ icons we know today. While grappling with their identity and sexuality, often alone, they also faced academic meltdown, their parents’ divorce, and the looming pressure of what might come after high school. Written in alternating chapters from both Tegan’s point of view and Sara’s, the book is a raw account of the drugs, alcohol, love, music, and friendships they explored in their formative years. A transcendent story of first loves and first songs, it captures the tangle of discordant and parallel memories of two sisters who grew up in distinct ways even as they lived just down the hall from one another. This is the origin story of Tegan and Sara.

Vivek Shraya has reason to be afraid. Throughout her life she's endured acts of cruelty and aggression for being too feminine as a boy and not feminine enough as a girl. In order to survive childhood, she had to learn to convincingly perform masculinity. As an adult, she makes daily compromises to steel herself against everything from verbal attacks to heartbreak. Now, with raw honesty, Shraya delivers an important record of the cumulative damage caused by misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia, releasing trauma from a body that has always refused to assimilate.

Before Tegan and Sara took the music world by storm, the Quins were just two identical twins trying to find their place in a new home and new school. From first crushes to the perils of puberty, surviving junior high is something the sisters plan to face side-by-side, just like they've always faced things. But growing up also means growing apart, as Tegan and Sara make different friends and take separate paths to understanding their queerness. For the first time ever, they ask who one sister is without the other.

Travis Wren has an unusual talent for locating missing people. Often hired by families as a last resort, he takes on the case of Maggie St. James—a well-known author of dark, macabre children’s books—and is soon led to a place many believed to be only a legend. Called Pastoral, this reclusive community was founded in the 1970s by like-minded people searching for a simpler way of life. By all accounts, the commune shouldn’t exist anymore and soon after Travis stumbles upon it…he disappears. Just like Maggie St. James.

Histoire
Vivek Shraya knows this to be true: people change. We change our haircuts and our outfits and our minds. We change names, titles, labels. We attempt to blend in or to stand out. We outgrow relationships, we abandon dreams for new ones, we start fresh. We seize control of our stories. We make resolutions. In fact, nobody knows this better than Vivek, who’s made a career of embracing many roles: artist, performer, musician, writer, model, teacher. In People Change, she reflects on the origins of this impulse, tracing it to childhood influences from Hinduism to Madonna.

Anyone who saw an episode of Saturday Night Live between 1999 and 2006 knows Rachel Dratch. She was hilarious! So what happened to her? After a misbegotten part as Jenna on the pilot of 30 Rock, Dratch was only getting offered roles as "Lesbians. Secretaries. Sometimes secretaries who are lesbians." Her career at a low point, Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog- sitting, learning Spanish - and dating. After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose?

Brings me back...
I was in high school in Canada at the same time as Tegan and Sara, so this book is reminiscent of those days for me. I love the rawness of their story telling and the original recordings of some of their first songs. Listening to it for a second time already!

if your a Tegan and Sara fan, it's well worth it
Memoirs are not a genre I usually gravitate towards but this one is special becuase of the authors and their story. it means a lot to hear intimate details of people that I idolized as a young person when I was trying to navigate sexuality and coming out and feeling very othered. really enjoyed listening to this. I liked that they didn't seem to make their story fancy or flashy - they do stuff that young ppl in the 90s would do like going to Dennys regularly and such. it feels honest which I really appreciate.

Flashbacks! Crescent Heights Grad. Was in grade 10 when T&S where in 12.
I lived in Marlborough pretty much the hub of where these stories took place. Yes, our school was filled with Preps in the student Centre who hung out on the left hand side beside the stage. I called them the Happy Shiny People. Most of them didn’t grow up in the NE. They were the kids from Balmoral. Yes, our school was this tough to be in. In fact some kids we graded with in those years died young. Our teachers were this strange. The drama kids were a weird cult and the pit scared me. Our school was very homophobic as well. Calgary is a town of religion and oil. I don’t think I ever hung out with T or S. Yet this book is like a DeJaVu. I remember their Orange band stickers on lockers. They do a beautiful job describing their lives, the era before cell phones and what it was like to be a kid in the NE. I really feel this is a great book for any young woman struggling with their sexuality to know that others have been there too. This book is honest, truthful, accurate and it’s very well written.

if you want the story of twins, discovering who they are and coming out and making music to express everything they couldn't. I highly suggest this. I am glad i listened, it was a priviledge to hear this from their own voices.

wow!
I love Tegan and Sara! JUST saying! This book made me feel so many emotions. Most of all, they used their voice! Not only singing but standing up for Gay people at a young age. Damn, girl, throw that chair! You did it for all those people who wanted to stand up for themselves, but we're too scared too. That moment with their stepdad in Denny's made me cry and laugh simultaneously. This book is a favorite, next to Trevor Noah's memoir! I live in North Vancouver, loved you guys for many years! Can I please buy your first tape set? I love every song in this book. I feel like I'm writing to you, like you guys would actually read it. Haha anyway. I hope you guys do write more books because, throughout this book, I felt like it was like a fiction book. It reads like one.

Love the interactions and stories from Tegan and Sara at concerts so obviously a book read by them is bound to be amazing! It includes actual recordings of their music from
Back in the day and a lot of detail about their lives that were quite shocking at times!

Honestly so good. This might be the best audio book I've ever read. It was such a pleasant surprise, you get to hear a lot of old footage and old music from when they were in highschool. It's such an immersive experience.
